Andrew Flintoff has stepped down as England Lions head coach after holding the role since September 2024, the England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed.

Flintoff did not give a detailed reason for leaving. His statement presented the departure as his own decision and pointed towards a forthcoming role with Sydney Thunder later this year as the next confirmed step in his coaching career.

Flintoff reflects on developing young players

Flintoff said he had enjoyed working with the country’s leading young cricketers and took particular pride in watching them develop during his time with the Lions.

He thanked the programme’s coaches and staff for their work and support, singling out ECB Men’s Performance Director Ed Barney. Flintoff also thanked Rob Key for entrusting him with what he called one of the most important roles in English cricket.

“Unfortunately I’ve made the decision to step away from my role with the Lions,” Flintoff said. He added that he could not wait to begin working with Sydney Thunder and discover where the next stage of his coaching career would take him.

He also credited Flintoff with making effective use of the experience available within the coaching group. The ECB wished him well in the next stage of his career and said it looked forward to a time when he returns to the English game.

Flintoff’s departure ends a tenure of less than two years. The Lions programme will continue as a development environment for players and coaches, but the ECB announcement did not name a permanent successor or give a timetable for making a long-term appointment.

Mike Yardy takes charge for Pakistan fixture

Mike Yardy will step in as head coach for the Professional County Club Select XI’s four-day match against Pakistan Men. The fixture begins at Beckenham on Wednesday 12 August.

Yardy’s appointment addresses the next confirmed match rather than establishing a permanent change in England Lions leadership. For now, Flintoff’s move to Sydney Thunder and Yardy’s temporary responsibility for the Pakistan fixture are the only next steps confirmed by the ECB.
