Young people aged 14 to 25 can join free ArtForum sessions at Wolverhampton Art Gallery on the first and third Wednesday of each month during term time. The hands-on workshops run from 5pm to 7pm, giving members space to create artwork while learning how exhibitions and events are staged.

Making art and learning how galleries work

The new awards recognise visual arts organisations whose education programmes demonstrate progressive approaches and a measurable impact.

Wolverhampton Art Gallery was chosen alongside The Burton at Bideford in North Devon and SIGNAL in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Each organisation will receive £100,000 and collaborate with the Freelands Foundation on a case-study film intended to share its approach with other organisations.

Dr Henry Ward, director of the Freelands Foundation and chair of the judging panel, said the three winners demonstrated innovative and collaborative approaches rooted in their local communities. Judges reviewed entries from galleries and arts organisations across the UK before visiting a shortlisted group in person.

A route into further creative experience

ArtForum sits at the opening stage of a broader programme designed to help young people build skills and pursue opportunities in the creative industries. Participants can progress from the youth group into MORE ART INC, an incubator for emerging artists aged 16 to 30 from Wolverhampton and surrounding areas.

MORE ART INC focuses on equipping participants with tools for navigating creative work. The council says some members have continued their development through exhibitions and residencies at arts organisations around the UK.

The programme is intended to include young people with different demographic and economic backgrounds, including participants who have had no previous experience of galleries, exhibitions or artistic practice. Council leader Stephen Simkins said the youth programme had helped young people who previously felt art galleries were not places where they belonged to pursue careers in the creative industries.
