Arthur Fery arrived at Wimbledon ranked world No.114. After reaching the semi-finals, the 24-year-old climbed to a career-high No.36 and became British No.1 for the first time.

That 78-place rise took Fery above Cameron Norrie, who had led the British men’s rankings since March 2026. Fery is also the 20th man to hold the domestic No.1 position since the LTA’s published list began in 1973.

Four Wimbledon wins transformed Fery’s ranking

Fery entered Wimbledon as a wild card and became the first wild-card player in 25 years to reach a Grand Slam singles semi-final.

His run included victories over Otto Virtanen, Zizou Bergs, former world No.3 Grigor Dimitrov and ninth seed Flavio Cobolli. Second seed Alexander Zverev ended the campaign in the last four.

Fery had already broken into the top 100 after reaching the third round. Advancing two rounds further carried him into the ATP top 40 for the first time and established No.36 as his new career best.

The record concerns how he entered the tournament and how far he progressed; it does not make him a Wimbledon finalist or champion. His semi-final result nevertheless made him the final British singles player left in the competition.

A season-long climb accelerated on grass

Fery began 2026 at No.185 after securing his first ATP Challenger title in Barranquilla during the previous season. His early progress included qualifying for the Australian Open and defeating 20th seed Cobolli for his first main-draw victory at the tournament.

He later qualified for the Miami Open to make his ATP Masters 1000 debut. His form continued on grass with a semi-final at the Lexus Birmingham Open and his first ATP 500 quarter-final at the HSBC Championships.

Those results had moved Fery to No.114 before Wimbledon. The Grand Slam semi-final then supplied the largest single change in his ranking position, carrying him past the top-100 and top-40 thresholds during the same tournament.

Fery described becoming British No.1 as an honour and called the jump into the top 40 “incredible”, having viewed entering the top 100 as a major career milestone only days earlier.

Britain now has three men inside the top 100

Fery leads a group of three British men in the ATP top 100. Cameron Norrie is the new British No.2, while Jan Choinski has also recently entered the leading 100 positions.

The domestic No.1 designation reflects their relative places in the ATP rankings rather than a separate British competition. Fery’s move above Norrie therefore identifies the country’s highest-ranked man at this point in the season, not a permanent title.

He joins a line of British No.1 players that has included Tim Henman, Andy Murray, Dan Evans, Jack Draper and Norrie. Fery’s route also included junior international competition, NCAA tennis at Stanford University and support through the LTA Pro Scholarship Programme.

Direct US Open entry follows the top-40 breakthrough

Fery is due to turn his attention to the North American hard-court swing. His new ranking gives him direct entry into the US Open, according to the LTA, removing the need to contest qualifying.

His confirmed plans also include Washington and the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Canada and Cincinnati before the season’s final Grand Slam.
