Barnet Council has recognised nine foster carers for their service to children and young people in the borough, with an awards ceremony attended by local carers, fostering staff and Cllr Alison Moore.

The event at Old Ford Manor Golf Club brought together 30 foster carers and highlighted the day-to-day work behind stable placements: safe homes, emotional support, family contact, life story memories and confidence-building for children who cannot live with their birth families.

Nine carers recognised for sustained support

Among those recognised were Devora and Reuben Judah, who have been approved Barnet foster carers since December 2022. The council said they had cared for two babies, supported one child’s transition to adoptive carers and helped build memories through photos and videos for life story work.

Euginia Lolomari was recognised after five years as an approved Barnet foster carer. During that time, the young person in her care developed confidence and independence, later progressing to university to study a subject she is passionate about.

Sonia and Terence McNeil, approved since December 2020, were praised for encouraging the child placed with them to “dream big” and for making sure his views were heard and respected.

Vicky and Vincent Pickering, also approved since December 2020, have been permanently matched with a foster child. Barnet Council said they had provided a loving and stable home while supporting the child’s cultural identity and contact with her birth family.

Barnet says more local carers are needed

Barnet’s foster carers currently provide homes for more than 300 children, but the borough still has a shortage of carers. The council said recent recruitment campaigns have helped it meet a target of 10 new foster carers a year over the past two years.

A Barnet Council spokesperson said foster carers provide love and care to children who are unable to live with their families, adding: “They are an inspiration to us all.”

Approved carers in Barnet can receive up to £581 per week, alongside 24/7 support, training, a dedicated social worker and peer support. The council is asking interested residents to contact fostering@barnet.gov.uk.
