Chester volunteers thanked as residents urged to help

Volunteers’ Week 2026 runs from Monday 1 June to Sunday 7 June, with Cheshire West and Chester Council using the week to thank more than 50,000 volunteers across the borough and encourage more residents to take part.

The week is aimed at people who already give their time, as well as residents who want to start volunteering locally but are not sure where to begin. Opportunities can include supporting vulnerable residents, helping community groups, improving green spaces and backing local services.

The essentials for residents

  • Dates: Monday 1 June to Sunday 7 June 2026.
  • Area: Cheshire West and Chester borough.
  • Cost: volunteering roles are unpaid, and residents can look for opportunities that fit their availability.
  • Who can take part: residents interested in community, wellbeing, environmental or support roles.
  • Where to look: Cheshire West Voluntary Action is signposting local volunteering opportunities.

More than 50,000 people already give time locally

Cheshire West and Chester Council said volunteers are already active across the borough in roles that help strengthen local communities. Their work ranges from practical support for residents to maintaining local places and helping organisations deliver services.

For residents who want a local example of community-led space and nature work, Beehive has also covered how a green space in Lache has reopened as a community nature hub.

The council is also linking volunteering to wellbeing. It said volunteering is recognised as one of the NHS Five Ways to Wellbeing, because it can help people connect with others, improve health and build a stronger sense of belonging.

How to find a volunteering role in Cheshire West

Residents who want to get involved are being encouraged to explore local roles through Cheshire West Voluntary Action, which supports volunteering across Cheshire and Warrington.

People looking for a first role should think about how much time they can realistically offer, whether they prefer one-off events or regular commitments, and what type of setting suits them best. Some roles may suit people who enjoy being outdoors, while others may involve befriending, administration, events, transport, fundraising or support for local charities.

The council said it is strengthening its volunteering offer so residents can more easily find opportunities and play an active part in their communities.

Summer events will thank local volunteers

As part of the Volunteers’ Week celebrations, Storyhouse Chester is working with Cheshire West Voluntary Action and five other charities on a Summer of Appreciation.

The initiative will bring local organisations together to recognise the contribution made by volunteers across the borough. Throughout the summer, volunteers will be able to attend a range of free events as a thank you for their work.

Maria Byrne, Director of Place Operations at Cheshire West and Chester Council, thanked volunteers for the time they give to local communities.

“I would like to personally thank all of the volunteers across the borough who give their time to help make their communities the best they can be,” she said.
