A murder investigation is under way after a 25-year-old man was fatally shot in Clapham on Monday night. A 22-year-old man who later arrived at hospital with a gunshot wound has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The Metropolitan Police said officers and the London Ambulance Service were called to Willington Road at 21:57 on 10 August following reports that shots had been fired. Medical professionals tried to save the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers. Police have not released his name.

Detectives believe the shooting happened at about 21:55 in the area around Willington Road and Landor Road. Emergency services were called two minutes later, at 21:57.

Shortly after the shooting, a man attended hospital with a gunshot wound. Police arrested the 22-year-old on suspicion of murder, and he remains in hospital. Investigators were still awaiting an update on his condition when the Metropolitan Police issued its statement on Tuesday morning.

The arrest forms part of an active investigation and does not establish guilt. Police have not confirmed the relationship, if any, between the arrested man and the victim. The circumstances leading to the shooting also remain under investigation.

The confirmed sequence is therefore limited: police believe shots were fired at approximately 21:55, emergency services were called at 21:57, and the second injured man attended hospital shortly afterwards. Detectives are continuing to establish what happened before and after those events.

Detectives focus enquiries around two Clapham roads

Officers are carrying out enquiries in and around Willington Road and Landor Road, where police believe the shooting took place. The force has not disclosed whether detectives have recovered a weapon or identified any further suspects.

Residents can expect an increased police presence in the area while enquiries continue. Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, the Central South Borough Commander, acknowledged that the incident would cause concern locally and said officers were working to establish the full circumstances.

“Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family for their tragic loss,” she said. Bond added that officers were working “tirelessly” to determine what happened.

The continuing police activity does not answer the central outstanding questions, including what led to the shooting and whether anyone else was involved. The Metropolitan Police has said only that enquiries remain active around the two roads and that the arrested man remains in hospital.

Police appeal for witnesses and information

Detectives want to hear from anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information that could assist the murder investigation. This includes people who were around Willington Road or Landor Road at approximately 21:55 on Monday.
