Six library books count towards the challenge
To complete Read to the Beat, children are challenged to read six books borrowed from the library during the school holidays. Derby City Council says children can choose what suits them: fiction, fact books, joke books, picture books, audiobooks and eBooks all count as long as they are borrowed from the library.
The challenge is delivered by the Reading Agency and public libraries. This year it is linked to the National Year of Reading and is being run in partnership with Universal Music Group UK, using music as the theme for activities around reading, imagination and storytelling.
For families planning summer activities, the format is deliberately simple. Children can start by visiting their local Derby library, joining the library if they are not already members, and choosing books to work through during the break.
Families looking for similar school-holiday reading support may also be interested in how other councils are using libraries and cultural venues, including free summer reading activities for families in Manchester.
Free Derby Libraries events start on 27 July
Alongside the reading challenge, Derby Libraries will host free interactive events from Monday 27 July. The sessions are designed around the Read to the Beat theme, combining storytelling with music, hands-on art, creative poetry and rhythm-based play.
Places at the events are limited, and booking ahead through a local library is essential. Derby City Council has also said all children must be accompanied by an adult.
The council has not published a single time for the overall challenge in the source notice, and families will need to check individual Derby Libraries event details for the sessions they want to attend.
Why libraries are focusing on reading over summer
The Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at keeping children reading for pleasure during the long break from school. Derby City Council said children’s reading can dip over the summer if they do not have regular access to books and encouragement to read.
The council’s notice points to three benefits: encouraging reading for pleasure, giving children a wider choice of stories and fact books, and helping build confidence with reading. It also says evidence shows children who enjoy reading are more likely to score highly on reading assessments, while children who use libraries are twice as likely to be above-average readers.
Councillor Sarah Chambers, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Communities, Equalities and Public Safety, said the challenge was a way for families to keep children inspired and confident during the school holidays.
“Music and reading both have an incredible power to spark imagination, making ‘Read to the Beat’ incredibly exciting – especially during the National Year of Reading,” she said.
How Derby families can take part
Children can sign up by visiting their local library in Derby. Library membership is the only requirement, and Derby City Council says joining is free and can be done when families come to the library.
The main challenge runs from Saturday 4 July to Saturday 29 August. The linked free events begin across Derby Libraries on Monday 27 July, with booking ahead through a local library required because places are limited.
