Scarborough’s seafront is set for aircraft overhead, marching bands on the ground and a veterans’ parade through the resort when Armed Forces Day Scarborough returns on Saturday, 27 June.
The free public event runs from 11am to 5pm in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, with North Yorkshire Council hosting the day as part of its Armed Forces Covenant work. It is aimed at residents, visitors, families, veterans, service families, serving personnel and cadets.
Six air displays over Scarborough
Air displays are a central part of this year’s programme, with six scheduled across the day. The first is due shortly after the event opens, followed by displays through the afternoon and a headline RAF Typhoon appearance late in the day.
| Time | Display |
|---|---|
| 11.30am | RAF Chinook flypast |
| 11.40am | RAF Tutor T Mark 1 precision display |
| 1.30pm | Hawker Fury display |
| 2.30pm | Calidus AutoGyro display |
| 3.30pm | RAF Supermarine Spitfire display |
| 4.05pm | RAF Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 display |
The RAF Chinook flypast is scheduled to open the aerial programme. The council describes the Chinook as one of the RAF’s most recognisable aircraft, able to carry up to 55 troops or heavy cargo loads.
Later in the day, the RAF Supermarine Spitfire is due to return to Scarborough’s skies before the RAF Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 closes the air programme with the day’s headline display.
Parade, cadets and bands on the ground
Alongside the aircraft, the programme includes traditional military marches, band displays, presentations and live music through the afternoon.
Scarborough Sea Cadets are among those taking part. Veterans, standards and cadets’ parades will be led by the Queen’s Own Yeomanry and the Yorkshire Volunteers Band.
This year’s attractions also include a Chelsea Pensioners display, described by the council as their first appearance at Scarborough Armed Forces Day.
North Yorkshire Council leader Cllr Carl Les said the event was “a show of unity, pride and community spirit” and part of a national day of support for serving troops, service families, veterans and cadets.
Why North Yorkshire has a strong Armed Forces link
North Yorkshire has more than 12,000 people working for the Ministry of Defence and 3,000 children from service families in schools, according to the council.
The county includes Catterick Garrison, one of the country’s largest military bases, as well as barracks at Dishforth, Ripon and Topcliffe. It is also home to RAF stations at Leeming, Fylingdales and Menwith Hill, and the Army Foundation College in Harrogate.
Cllr Kevin Foster, the council’s Armed Forces champion, said Armed Forces Day was “always a highlight for Scarborough” and a chance for residents and visitors to show appreciation for serving personnel, veterans, cadets and their families.
