Large outdoor cinema screen set up by a river during a summer evening.

A free outdoor screening of Mamma Mia will take place at Chester’s Rooftop Social Club on Wednesday, 9 September 2026. The film runs from 7pm to 9.30pm at the top of Pepper Street Car Park, CH1 1DF.

Tickets are required, although admission is free, and seating is included with every booking. The dog-friendly event is presented by Storyhouse as part of Moonlight Flicks and is open to the general public.

The rooftop screening brings the musical comedy starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried to Chester city centre. The story follows Greek-island hotelier Donna as she prepares for her daughter Sophie’s wedding, while Sophie secretly invites three men from her mother’s past in the hope of discovering which one is her father.

The setting combines the film with an open-air cinema experience above the city. Rooftop Social Club also has independent vendors serving pizza, Greek food, burgers and steak, alongside three bars operated by Liquor and Co.

Visitors do not need to bring folding chairs or other seating. A seat is provided with each Moonlight Flicks ticket.

The venue is on the top floor of Pepper Street Car Park in Chester city centre. According to the Visit Cheshire event listing, it is approximately a 17-minute walk from Chester Station and a 10-minute walk from Chester Bus Interchange.

The rooftop is fully wheelchair accessible. Facilities include a lift, a platform stair lift and accessible toilets. Free Essential Companion tickets are available through Storyhouse for visitors who require them.

Well-behaved dogs may attend without a ticket. Owners should account for the outdoor setting, other guests and the screening’s 7pm to 9.30pm running time when deciding whether to bring a pet.

Rain may not stop the screening

Moonlight Flicks will not cancel the event before 5pm on the day because conditions can change quickly. Organisers plan to assess the weather shortly before that time and will email ticket holders if the screening is cancelled. Visitors are advised to check both their inbox and junk folder.

Light drizzle expected to pass may not prevent the film from going ahead, while torrential rain or stormy conditions could lead to cancellation. As the screening is outdoors, the organisers recommend warm layers, a raincoat and an umbrella.

If the event is cancelled, the email address used for the booking will receive a message containing a form. That form will set out the options to exchange the ticket for another screening or request any applicable refund; ticket holders do not need to contact the organisers separately.
