Volunteer-led groups across Shropshire are being invited to attend free briefing workshops on The King’s Award for Voluntary Service, with three sessions scheduled in September.
The Shropshire Lieutenancy is running the workshops for organisations that may want to nominate a local group for the award, which recognises outstanding voluntary work across the UK. The sessions are aimed at volunteer-led organisations, including groups that are not registered charities.

Volunteer groups can check award eligibility
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service celebrates the work of volunteer groups across the UK. According to the Shropshire Lieutenancy notice, groups do not need to be registered charities, and any volunteer-led organisation with three or more volunteers can be nominated.
The award is described by the Lieutenancy as the equivalent of an MBE for voluntary groups and the highest award given to local voluntary groups in the UK. For Shropshire organisations, the September sessions are designed to explain both the award itself and the nomination process.
That makes the workshops a practical route for groups that have strong local support but may be unsure whether they meet the criteria, how nominations work, or what information needs to be prepared before an application moves forward.
The Lord-Lieutenant has said she wants to support more organisations across Shropshire to win the award, after seeing voluntary groups in the county receive the recognition in previous years. The Lieutenancy says the award can raise a group’s profile, acknowledge its work and help with funding.
Ludlow, Telford and Zoom sessions confirmed
The first in-person briefing will take place at Ludlow Methodist Hall on Wednesday 9 September, from 11am to 12.30pm. The venue address is 52 Broad Street, Ludlow SY8 1NH.
A second in-person session is scheduled for Monday 14 September, from 2pm to 3.30pm, at Telford & Wrekin Council Chamber. The council chamber is listed as being above the Library in Southwater 1, Telford TF3 4JG.
An evening virtual workshop has also been added on Tuesday 29 September, running from 7pm to 8pm on Zoom.
The Shropshire Lieutenancy recommends attending one of the in-person workshops in Ludlow or Telford where possible. It says those sessions give members of the Shropshire KAVS panel the opportunity to look in more detail at an individual group’s eligibility.
