The town of Gargždai, situated in the heart of the Klaipėda region, is preparing to mark its 773rd anniversary with a week-long festival from June 1 to June 7. While the schedule is packed with local festivities, a significant portion of the programme has been specifically designed to welcome back the Lithuanian diaspora, many of whom now reside in the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe.
For those planning a trip back to Lithuania this June, the celebrations offer a unique opportunity to reconnect with local heritage and witness the town’s ongoing transformation. The festival serves as more than just a party; it is a formal gesture of recognition for the thousands of locals who have built lives abroad but maintain deep emotional and familial ties to their birthplace.
Key Events for Returning Residents
The highlight for the international community occurs on Friday, June 5, with two specific dedications aimed at those who have lived or are currently living abroad. These events are designed to create a permanent space for the diaspora within the town’s physical and cultural landscape.
- 15:30 – Unveiling of the Diaspora Bench: Located outside the J. Lankutis Public Library (Klaipėdos g. 15, Gargždai), this commemorative bench is dedicated to the Klaipėda region’s global community. It is intended to serve as a meeting point for returning friends and a symbol of the town’s open-door policy.
- 16:00 – Opening of the ‘Lithuanian-ness’ Corner: Following the bench unveiling, the J. Lankutis Public Library will host the official opening of a dedicated space focused on national identity and the diaspora experience. This ‘Lietuvybės kampelis’ (Lithuanian-ness Corner) will act as a resource and archive for stories of the region’s people across the globe.
Both events are free to attend and do not require prior registration. They are positioned as informal gatherings where memories can be shared between those who stayed and those who moved away.
A Growing Tradition of Connection
The inclusion of diaspora-specific events reflects a broader national trend in Lithuania to maintain ‘Global Lithuania’—a concept that views the nation not as a fixed geographic border, but as a community of people regardless of where they live. Gargždai, as the administrative centre of the Klaipėda district, is at the forefront of this movement.

Ligita Liutikienė, the Vice-Mayor of the Klaipėda District, emphasized that these meetings are a meaningful opportunity to strengthen bonds. “Perhaps you are returning to the Klaipėda region for a holiday, or perhaps you lived abroad and have now returned home for good—we invite you to these events,” she stated. The goal is to ensure that no matter how long someone has been away, the sense of ‘home’ remains tangible.
Visiting Gargždai This June
Visitors travelling from the UK will find Gargždai conveniently located just a 20-minute drive from the port city of Klaipėda and roughly 45 minutes from Palanga International Airport, which serves several direct routes from London.
Beyond the diaspora-focused ceremonies on June 5, the week-long festival includes various concerts, art exhibitions, and community markets. The J. Lankutis Public Library, the focal point for the June 5 events, is one of the region’s most active cultural hubs, named after the prominent literary critic Jonas Lankutis.
For those who haven’t visited in several years, the birthday celebrations offer a chance to see the modern developments in the town, which has become an increasingly popular residential area for those working in the nearby Free Economic Zone and the port of Klaipėda. The town’s location near the Minija River also provides ample opportunities for nature walks and traditional Lithuanian outdoor activities during the early summer peak.
