The exhibition is aimed at families and follows the animals that lived after the dinosaurs became extinct, taking visitors from 66 million years ago to the present day.

Mammoths, megalodons and a giant primate

Among the creatures featured in Giants are an Otodus megalodon, described by the exhibition as the mightiest shark of all time; the woolly mammoth, Mammuthus primigenius; and Gigantopithecus blacki, an Asian primate said to have been comparable in size to three orangutans.

The displays bring together life-sized 3D sculptures with skeletons and fossils. The woolly mammoth model reflects an animal the source says weighed between six and eight tonnes, with thick fur and large tusks.

Interactive learning for family visitors

The exhibition includes interactive elements focused on palaeontology and biology, allowing visitors to explore how researchers study ancient life. It also connects extinct creatures with present-day giants including elephants, rhinoceroses and whales, which the exhibition notes are under threat of extinction. Families can also explore the museum’s Evolving Earth display for related context.

For visitors planning a trip, the confirmed next step is to book in advance online if seeking the lower ticket price. Giants remains at the National Museum of Scotland until 14 September 2026.
