A 29-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged assault carrying a racial aggravator during disorder linked to planned protest activity in Glasgow. Police Scotland said he is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday, 12 August.

The charge concerns an alleged assault on a 31-year-old man on Bridge Street on Saturday, 25 July. It represents the latest confirmed development in the investigation into violence and disorder around Glasgow city centre that day.

Police announced the arrest on Tuesday, 11 August, following a pre-planned operation involving visits to properties in Pollokshields and Govan. Divisional officers and members of the Major Investigations Team took part.

Charge follows alleged Bridge Street assault

Police described the alleged offence as an assault with a racial aggravator. That wording indicates the aggravating element attached to the charge reported by officers; it does not establish guilt, which is a matter for the court.

Investigation continues after Glasgow Green disorder

The wider inquiry concerns significant disorder associated with planned protest activity at Glasgow Green on 25 July. Police Scotland previously reported that 15 people were arrested that day for a range of alleged offences, including assault, possession of offensive weapons, breach of the peace, obstruction and resisting arrest.

Several weapons were also recovered, according to the force. The new charge announced on 11 August is part of the continuing investigation rather than a replacement for those earlier arrests.

Chief Superintendent Emma Croft, divisional commander for Greater Glasgow, said the latest operation followed several weeks of work by a dedicated team of detectives. She said further arrests were expected and drew a distinction between lawful protest and violence, disorder, hate crime or threatening conduct that puts public safety at risk.

CCTV and public footage remain under review

Investigators are continuing to examine CCTV recordings, mobile phone videos and dashcam footage to identify people suspected of involvement. Police have not set an end date for those enquiries.

A Major Incident Public Portal has been established for photographs or footage showing suspected criminality connected with the Glasgow disorder on 25 July. Police said the material can be submitted directly to the investigation team through the portal.

The next confirmed milestone is the 29-year-old man’s scheduled appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday, 12 August.
