Hull families can cut bus costs this August

Families in Hull and the East Riding can reduce the cost of summer days out with free bus travel for children and half-price fares for teenagers throughout August 2026.

The offer runs from Saturday 1 August to Monday 31 August on Stagecoach East Midlands and East Yorkshire services across the HEYCA region. Children aged five to 15 can travel free, while passengers aged 16 to 19 can ask for a Mayor’s Fares ticket and pay half price.

Who can travel free or at a discount?

Children aged five to 15 do not need to register, show a travel card or apply in advance. They can simply board an eligible bus during August and travel at no cost.

Young people aged 16 to 19 can access the 50% discount by asking the driver for a Mayor’s Fares ticket. The scheme is intended to help teenagers travel to activities, events, family visits and days out without the usual holiday travel costs.

The initiative forms part of the Government’s Great British Summer Savings Scheme, with both local bus operators taking part. The mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire has funded the additional discount for 16-to-19-year-olds.

How much will bus journeys cost?

For passengers under 20, the maximum fare on an East Yorkshire or Stagecoach East Midlands bus in the HEYCA region will be £1.50 for a single journey or £3 for a return.

Adults over the age of 20 can also pay no more than £3 for a single journey under the current Government fare cap. This means a family travelling together can keep the cost of local journeys below the standard fare for much of the summer.

What families can do during August

The cheaper fares can be used to reach attractions and holiday activities across Hull and the East Riding. Local programmes mentioned by the councils include Healthy Holidays Hull, Dino Day, the Hull Maritime Summer Festival, Kids Go Wild at nature reserves, Summer of Fun at Sewerby Hall and Gardens, and events along the coast such as Race The Waves.

For families planning several trips, the offer may make it easier to leave the car at home and connect different destinations by bus. The same fares also give teenagers more independence when travelling during the school holidays.

Families elsewhere in England can also compare the summer bus travel offer for children in Somerset, although the Hull and East Riding arrangements apply specifically to participating Stagecoach East Midlands and East Yorkshire services.

Check the fare before boarding

The free child travel and Mayor’s Fares discount apply from 1 to 31 August 2026. No advance application is required, but 16-to-19-year-olds should ask for the correct Mayor’s Fares ticket when boarding.

The participating operators are Stagecoach East Midlands and East Yorkshire. Matt Kitchin of East Yorkshire and Matt Cranwell of Stagecoach East Midlands said the scheme would help families explore the region and use public transport for summer journeys.
