Councillor Rosaline Ogunro has been sworn in as Mayor of Islington for 2026/27, with St Luke’s Community Centre and Islington Boat Club named as the two charities she will support during her mayoral year.
The St Peter’s and Canalside councillor formally took office at Islington Council’s Annual Council meeting on Wednesday, 27 May. She succeeds Cllr Jason Jackson, who served as Mayor over the past year.
Rosaline Ogunro’s council record
Cllr Ogunro has represented St Peter’s and Canalside since May 2022. During her time as a councillor, she has sat on several council committees, including Homes and Communities Scrutiny, Children and Young People Scrutiny, Planning, and Licensing.

The Annual Council meeting also confirmed the new Executive, led by Council Leader Cllr Una O’Halloran, following this month’s local elections.
Outside council work, Cllr Ogunro is a singer with two music albums to her name. She was a member of the London Symphony Orchestra Community Choir from 2003 to 2022, and her other interests include designing and making clothes.
Two charities chosen for the mayoral year
Each Mayor of Islington chooses charities to champion and raise funds for while in office. Cllr Ogunro has selected St Luke’s Community Centre, which provides community activities including lunches, classes and intergenerational sessions involving primary school children and older residents.

Her second chosen charity, Islington Boat Club, provides water sports activities and training. Its work focuses on young people, people with additional needs, and older residents who need extra support, with courses designed to build life skills.
Speaking after the Mayor-making ceremony, Cllr Ogunro said there was nothing she enjoyed more than helping and serving the community, adding that becoming Mayor was “the honour of a lifetime”.
Cllr Ogunro’s son, Zulu Ogunro, will serve as Mayor’s consort for the year. Cllr Chowdhury has been appointed Deputy Mayor, with Nilu Chowdhury as consort.
