Kaunas is preparing to welcome the summer season with a comprehensive overhaul of the Lampėdis lakefront, transforming one of the city’s most popular recreational spots into a modern, inclusive leisure zone. Starting June 1st, the official commencement of the swimming season, residents and visitors will have access to modernized beaches featuring new recreational infrastructure, improved accessibility, and enhanced safety measures.
The southern part of Lampėdis Lake, specifically the area near Gervių Street, has undergone a total transformation. The project introduces a public beach equipped with new changing cabins, paved paths, stairs, and ramps designed for universal access. In a move toward greater inclusivity, the site now includes information stands specifically adapted for the visually impaired. These upgrades are part of a broader initiative to ensure that the city’s natural assets are accessible to all members of the community, regardless of physical ability.
Modern Amenities and Enhanced Accessibility
The renovation extends beyond basic beach facilities. The area has been outfitted with automated toilets, outdoor showers, and fresh water drinking stations to improve the comfort of day-trippers. For those seeking active recreation, the city has installed a dedicated children’s playground and a modern outdoor gym zone.

Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis noted that while the shoreline near the local campsite had been developed previously, this new phase brings the southern banks up to contemporary standards. The investment is not limited to the shore; the lakebed itself has been cleaned and leveled multiple times. Furthermore, the installation of a professional rowing track has positioned the lake as a hub for water sports, with a dedicated judges’ tower for international competitions expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Strategic Improvements to Traffic and Safety
To address long-standing issues with chaotic traffic and unauthorized parking near the water, the Kaunas municipality has implemented a new traffic management plan. A spacious parking lot has been established at the entrance to the beach zone. To ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, vehicle access further down Gervių Street will now be restricted by a rising barrier.

Martynas Matusevičius, head of the Transport and Traffic Management Department, emphasized that these changes are designed to eliminate the previous congestion and create a safer environment for families. By centralizing parking and limiting through-traffic, the city aims to preserve the tranquil atmosphere of the lakeside park.
City-Wide Preparation for the Swimming Season
While Lampėdis Lake is a primary focus, the city’s preparations for June 1st extend to other popular swimming spots. Maintenance crews are currently refreshing the sand and repairing benches and cabins at the Kaunas Reservoir near the Pažaislis Monastery, as well as the Panemunė beach along A. Smetona Avenue.

Environmental safety remains a priority throughout the month of May. The Kaunas Sport School ‘Bangpūtys’ is currently finalizing the recruitment and training of lifeguard teams. Simultaneously, the city is conducting rigorous testing of both water and sand quality to ensure all sites meet public health standards before the first swimmers arrive. These proactive measures reflect the city’s commitment to providing high-quality, safe, and modern public spaces for summer recreation.
