Maldon families can turn a park walk into a free challenge

Families can join the free Xplorer outdoor navigation game at Promenade Park in Maldon from Wednesday 22 July. The weekly engagement stand will operate from 10am to 4pm every Wednesday during the school summer holidays, with no booking required.

Designed for children and families, Xplorer turns a visit to the park into a search for markers. Participants follow navigation challenges, answer simple questions and learn the basics of orienteering while exploring the open space. Maldon District Council is delivering the programme through Active Maldon.

Dates, location and entry details

  • First session: Wednesday 22 July

  • Schedule: Every Wednesday during the school summer holidays
  • Venue: Promenade Park, Park Drive, Maldon, CM9 5JQ
  • Price: Free
  • Entry: Drop in; no booking required

The programme period is listed through 31 August, although the council notice defines the Promenade Park schedule by the school summer holidays rather than naming the final Wednesday. It does not provide transport or accessibility information for the engagement stand.

How the Xplorer park challenge works

Xplorer is a family-friendly navigation game created by British Orienteering. Instead of simply walking through the park, children are encouraged to look for markers and complete straightforward questions as they move around the space.

The format introduces young participants to basic orienteering through practical challenges. Families can meet the council team at the Xplorer Engagement Stand to learn how the activity works before taking part.

The stand is intended as an introduction rather than a separate booked event. Visitors can arrive during its six-hour opening window, speak to the team and find out how to begin the challenge.

The project is part of Active Maldon

Active Maldon is the council’s health and wellbeing programme, which supports projects intended to help residents become more active and use local parks, open spaces and community facilities. The engagement team will also explain other opportunities to get active across the district.

Councillor Simon Morgan, leader of Maldon District Council, said Xplorer could turn a walk into an adventure while helping children explore, learn skills and spend time outdoors with family and friends. He also highlighted the decision to make participation free during the school holidays.

Parish and town councils interested in bringing Xplorer to their own communities can discuss funding opportunities with the council’s health and wellbeing team through the Active Maldon programme.

Riverside Park sessions have yet to be dated

Xplorer is also planned for Riverside Park, extending the activity towards Burnham. However, no dates have yet been confirmed for the in-person engagement sessions there.

Families considering Riverside Park will need to wait for a further announcement. Maldon District Council says those dates, along with additional instructions on taking part, will be published through its social media channels.
