Milton Keynes City Council has marked Volunteers’ Week by recognising local people who give their time to support families at its Family Centres.
A special lunch and awards presentation was held for volunteers working alongside council staff across the city’s 10 Family Centres. More than 50 volunteers help keep the centres running for residents who use them for family activities, courses, adult support and practical help.

Volunteers keep daily support moving
The Family Centres welcome more than 5,000 residents each month and remain open throughout the year. Volunteers help with front-of-house welcomes, setting up group activities, answering phones and maintaining garden spaces.
They also support the local Community Larder, where food and household essentials are organised and distributed to residents who need extra help.
For some volunteers, the role has also become a route back into confidence, skills and work. RJ, who volunteers at Moorlands Family Centre, said the opportunity came while they were feeling isolated and struggling, and later helped them move into part-time work at the centre.

Maria, a volunteer at Hedgerows Family Centre, said the experience had encouraged her to pursue a career in childcare after seeing the difference Family Centre support can make for children and parents.
Awards lunch marks Volunteers’ Week
Volunteers’ Week runs from 1 to 7 June each year and celebrates the contribution made by people who volunteer across the UK.
Councillor Peter Cannon, Milton Keynes City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, thanked the volunteers for the time, care and dedication they bring to the city’s Family Centres.

He said their work helps centre teams reach more people and offer a wider range of support to families across Milton Keynes.
