Northampton families to gain new one-stop support hub at Central Library
Starting this autumn, Northampton Central Library will undergo a significant transformation to house a dedicated Best Start Family Hub. This new facility aims to centralise essential services for parents, carers, and young people, providing a single point of access for health, education, and social support in the heart of the town centre.
The project is designed to streamline how local families interact with public services. By co-locating health professionals, early years specialists, and family support workers, the hub removes the need for residents to visit multiple locations across the borough.

The Northampton Family Hub is a cornerstone of the West Northamptonshire Council “Best Start in Life” local plan. This strategy focuses on the critical window from pregnancy through the early years, ensuring children are developmentally ready to start school, where new school rules help maintain a focused learning environment. For families navigating Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), the hub provides a specialized environment where support is tailored to specific sensory and physical requirements.
Specialized facilities for early development
The refurbishment will convert a portion of the library’s ground floor into a modern, accessible space. Drawing on the successful design of the existing Towcester Family Hub, the Northampton site will include dedicated health clinic rooms for midwife and health visitor appointments.

A key addition is the installation of sensory and quiet spaces, specifically designed to support children with neurodivergent needs or those who require a calmer environment than a standard public library offers. A new wet play area will also be integrated to encourage physical development and creative play among toddlers and infants.
Crucially, the existing Children’s Library will remain co-located within the space. It is also scheduled for a full refurbishment as part of the works, ensuring that literacy and learning resources are seamlessly integrated with health and welfare services.
Improving town centre accessibility
Choosing Central Library as the site for the hub is a strategic move to improve accessibility. Located on Abington Street, the hub is within walking distance of major bus routes and town centre car parks, making it easier for families who rely on public transport to attend appointments or access advice.

The integration of these services into a landmark public building also aims to reduce the stigma sometimes associated with seeking family support. By placing a family hub inside a library, the council is positioning these services as a natural part of community life rather than isolated social interventions.
Current support and registration
While the physical construction is slated for the coming months, the Family Hub team has already begun its outreach work. Staff are currently stationed within Central Library to engage with visitors, explain the upcoming changes, and help parents register for the various support programmes available.
Over the next few weeks, the team will increase their presence with a series of one-off sessions. These activities are designed to complement the existing schedule in the Children’s Library and provide a preview of the type of integrated support families can expect once the refurbishment is complete.
Parents and carers do not need to wait for the building work to finish to access help. The council is encouraging early registration, which allows families to stay informed about clinic dates and self-refer for one-to-one support if they are facing specific challenges at home. Registration can be completed through the dedicated Family Hubs portal or by speaking with a team member in person at the library.
