Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 25, to significantly expand the fitness facilities at Danes Camp Leisure Centre. This project is part of a wider investment by West Northamptonshire Council and their operator partner, Everyone Active, to modernize local health hubs and increase capacity for residents.

Danes Camp gym capacity to increase by 60 percent

The current 50-station gym at Danes Camp Leisure Centre will undergo a substantial footprint extension, growing to house 80 stations by the time work concludes in September. This expansion utilizes the space previously occupied by the old health suite, which has remained closed since April 1 due to safety requirements identified at the start of the current leisure contract.

Visitors can expect a complete overhaul of the available fitness technology. The upgrade includes a broader range of state-of-the-art equipment, specifically focusing on increased cable stations and lifting racks to meet the growing demand for strength training. The facility will also install a full suite of pin-loaded machines and introduce hydro massage beds, a new recovery feature for the center.

Lings Forum expansion features new Reformer Pilates studio

While work commences at Danes Camp, the redevelopment of Lings Forum Leisure Centre is already well underway. The fitness suite there is being scaled up to accommodate more than 120 stations, making it one of the largest public gym offerings in the region.

A key addition to the Lings Forum site is the dedicated Reformer studio. This specialist space will house 18 Reformer machines, which utilize adjustable resistance and a moving platform system. These machines are designed for low-impact, high-intensity workouts that focus on core strength, flexibility, and injury rehabilitation, catering to users of all fitness levels and ages.

Project timeline and facility improvements

The phased approach to these upgrades ensures that while specific areas are under construction, broader leisure services continue to operate where possible. The following table outlines the primary changes coming to both sites:

Facility Key Upgrades and Capacity Changes
Danes Camp Expansion from 50 to 80 stations; new hydro massage beds; September completion.
Lings Forum Expansion to 120+ stations; new 18-machine Reformer Pilates studio.
Equipment New lifting racks, cable stations, and pin-loaded strength machines.

Future phases for Northampton leisure hubs

The gym extensions represent the initial stage of a larger refurbishment plan for Danes Camp Leisure Centre. Once the fitness suite is completed, the council and Everyone Active have outlined several follow-up projects to improve the overall visitor experience.

Upcoming works include the expansion of the group cycling studio and a full refurbishment of the existing exercise studios. To improve convenience for members, the center will also see the introduction of a ‘grab and go’ café and entirely new changing room facilities. These updates are part of a long-term commitment to improving the quality of public health infrastructure across West Northamptonshire, ensuring facilities remain modern and accessible for the community.

The investment aims to address the rising demand for fitness spaces in Northampton, providing more equipment and specialized workout options like Reformer Pilates to help residents meet their health and wellness goals.
