Plymouth’s Big Green Trail offers free family day out
Families heading into Central Park on Saturday 20 June will find The Big Green Trail spread across the park, with activity stops built around nature, creativity, cycling and everyday climate action.
The Plymouth event runs from 10am to 3pm and is free to attend. No booking is required. It is aimed at families and residents who want a relaxed outdoor day with hands-on activities rather than a formal workshop or ticketed festival.
Led by Climate Connections, a Plymouth City Council project, the Community Festival brings together local organisations and groups for a day focused on the city’s green spaces, wildlife and practical sustainability.

Visitors will be able to move around the free public art trail at their own pace. A specially designed Big Green Trail activity pack will help families find the stops, collect stamps and turn the route through Central Park into a small outdoor challenge.
That format makes the day useful for different ages: children can follow the stamp trail and games, while adults can pick up practical advice on bikes, home energy and local environmental projects.
Nature, crafts and cycling challenges across the trail
The programme includes an inflatable obstacle course from Westcountry Rivers Trust, designed as a playful way to explore how rivers work. Nature-focused stops will include crafts, wildlife identification and guided walks with National Trust and Green Communities.
Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and Ocean Conservation Trust will bring marine games and ocean artefacts, while organisations including RSPB, Devon Wildlife Trust and Dartmoor Zoo will share work linked to wildlife and conservation.
Creative activities are also part of the route. Climate Action Plymouth will host Haikus for Hope, while Plymouth Scrapstore and Sewcial Guild’s Sew on the Road will focus on reuse, making and hands-on repair culture.
For residents thinking about everyday transport, Dr Bike will offer a free bike service and safety check. Local transport organisations will also run cycling challenges as part of the day.
Plymouth Energy Community and Eljay Energy will use interactive games to introduce renewable energy and home advice, giving the event a practical side beyond the park activities.
Free trail bus and Beryl bike offer
Plymouth Citybus will run a free hop-on, hop-off trail bus on the day. Pick-up points listed for the service are Royal Parade, George Park and Ride, and Milehouse Park and Ride.
For those travelling by bike, Beryl is offering one free ride per person. The offer covers 20 minutes of riding plus a free unlock, with no code required.
The source notice does not list food stalls or specific accessibility arrangements, so visitors who need those details should check the full event information before travelling.
Local Climate Legends take a place on the route
The Big Green Trail will also highlight Plymouth’s Local Climate Legends, recognising residents, community groups and organisations working on environmental action across the city.
Visitors will be able to step into the Local Climate Legend Living Room to watch short films and hear local stories about projects already taking place in Plymouth.
Tom Briars-Delve, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “The Big Green Trail is a fantastic way for people of all ages to get outdoors and learn more about the small changes we can all make to protect our environment. It’s about bringing communities together while inspiring positive action for Plymouth’s greener future.”
The event runs in Central Park, Plymouth, on Saturday 20 June from 10am to 3pm, with free entry, no booking required, a free trail bus and one free 20-minute Beryl ride per person.
