Vilnius Pink Soup Fest: Pickleball Joins the World’s Pinkest Party
Lithuania’s capital is preparing to turn a vibrant shade of magenta once again as the fourth annual “Vilnius Pink Soup Fest” (Vilniaus šaltibarščių festivalis) takes over the city. This year, the celebration of the nation’s beloved cold beet soup is moving to a new central hub and introducing an unexpected sporting twist: the global phenomenon of pickleball.
Essential Festival Information
For those planning to attend or visiting the city, here are the vital details for the 2024 festivities:
- Dates: Saturday, May 30 (10:00 – 20:00) and Sunday, May 31 (10:00 – 18:00).
- Primary Location: The White Bridge (Baltasis tiltas) area, Vilnius.
- Activity Hub: Basketball courts near the skate park.
- Cost: Public festival areas are free to enter; pickleball trials include professional coaching at no cost.
- Requirements: Comfortable footwear and approximately 30 minutes for a basic introduction to the game.
A New Home for the Pink Wave
Traditionally held across various spots in the Old Town, the festival is consolidating its major activities at the White Bridge. This move marks a significant expansion, transforming the area into a high-energy zone for families, youth, and international visitors. The shift to the White Bridge—a location already synonymous with active lifestyle and outdoor sports in Vilnius—allows the festival to accommodate larger crowds and a wider array of interactive events.
While the focus remains on šaltibarščiai—the iconic neon-pink cold soup made from beets, kefir, cucumbers, and eggs—the organizers are leaning into the “pink lifestyle” by incorporating activities that mirror the soup’s energetic aesthetic and community-focused nature.
Why Pickleball is Joining the Menu
The headline addition to this year’s program is pickleball, a racket sport that has seen explosive growth in the United States and is now rapidly gaining traction across Europe. Often described as a hybrid of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, pickleball is praised for its low barrier to entry and multi-generational appeal.
Jurgita Kveselaitė, founder of the “Playdate” arena, notes that the connection between the sport and the soup is more than just a coincidence. “In a half-joking, half-serious way, the English name for the sport already hints at the soup’s ingredients—the pickle (cucumber). The ball reminds some of the egg, and the paddle looks like a cutting board. Most importantly, it is an incredibly inclusive sport that brings generations together, much like a family meal.”

Lithuania has already seen a surge in pickleball interest. A recent open championship in Vilnius attracted 260 participants, including over 100 international players from Latvia, Poland, Estonia, and the USA. By featuring the sport at the Pink Soup Fest, the city aims to tap into “active tourism,” specifically targeting American and European travelers who seek out pickleball communities while abroad.
Professional Coaching and Rewards
To ensure the sport is accessible to everyone, four professional courts and four coaches from the “Playdate” arena will be stationed at the White Bridge throughout the weekend. Visitors can walk onto the court, receive a quick briefing, and start playing with friends or family within minutes.
As an added incentive, every participant who tries pickleball during the festival will receive a gift: two free sessions with a coach at the specialized “Playdate” arena located in the Viršuliskės district. This initiative is designed to turn a one-time festival experience into a long-term hobby for residents and visitors alike.
A Celebration of Community and Cuisine
Beyond the courts, the festival continues to celebrate the cultural weight of šaltibarščiai. The event has become a viral sensation on social media in recent years, drawing foodies from across the globe to witness the city’s transformation. This year, attendees can also look forward to temporary tattoos featuring soup and pickleball motifs, alongside various other surprises designed to keep the atmosphere festive and “rožinė” (pink).
Whether you are there for the gastronomy or the games, the Vilnius Pink Soup Fest remains a unique example of how traditional heritage can be successfully blended with modern global trends to create a world-class urban event.
