Wokingham Borough has been officially named the best place in the United Kingdom to launch a new business, according to a comprehensive national study conducted by The Investors Centre. The research, published on 7 August 2026, evaluated locations based on seven critical metrics for long-term commercial viability, ultimately seeing the borough outperform major economic powerhouses including London, Edinburgh, and Manchester.

Metrics behind the economic ranking

The study assessed long-term success indicators including employment rates, business survival, economic productivity, high-growth company density, office costs, and workforce skills. Wokingham’s top ranking was driven by a combination of high economic productivity and a highly skilled local talent pool.

Data from the report highlights that the borough achieves an economic productivity rate of £61.46 gross value added per hour worked. Furthermore, 81 per cent of the local population holds qualifications at Level 3 or above, providing a deep, capable workforce for employers. The area also boasts a 61.17 per cent three-year business survival rate—one of the highest in the country—alongside a significant concentration of high-growth enterprises.

Local leadership and the ‘place-first’ philosophy

Cllr Mark Ashwell, executive member for Economic Development, Sport, Leisure, Countryside and the Arts, attributed the success to a long-term strategy of fostering partnerships between the council, educational institutions, and the private sector.

“This isn’t about luck. It reflects years of building an environment where businesses can invest with confidence, recruit skilled people and grow,” Cllr Ashwell said. He noted that the council’s philosophy focuses on supporting local entrepreneurs and placing community needs at the heart of economic planning, rather than relying on top-down regulation. According to the council, this “place-first” approach demonstrates that when local authorities work alongside businesses rather than simply regulating them, communities are better positioned to prosper.

Future growth and community integration

The council intends to leverage this recognition to further strengthen ties with education providers and local community organizations. This ongoing strategy is designed to ensure that economic growth remains sustainable and continues to provide diverse opportunities for future generations within the borough. By prioritizing a model that emphasizes local leadership and partnership, the local authority aims to maintain the area’s reputation as a prime destination for both living and conducting business.

As the council moves forward, the focus remains on enabling business-led growth, attracting further investment, and ensuring that the economic benefits of this ranking translate into tangible improvements for everyday life in Wokingham.
