Beat the Street: Thurrock’s Free Community Challenge Returns

A popular community health initiative is set to return to Thurrock this month, encouraging residents to get active through a six-week walking and cycling challenge. The Beat the Street programme, organised by Thurrock Council, is designed to help residents of all ages spend more time outdoors, improve their physical health, and stay better connected to their local area.

Starting on 23 September 2026, the challenge will launch across four specific locations: East Tilbury, Stanford-le-Hope, Horndon on the Hill, and Corringham. The programme is open to the general public and is completely free to participate in.

How the Challenge Works

Beat the Street encourages participants to walk, cycle, run, scoot, or wheel their way around their local community. The programme uses interactive ‘Beat Boxes’ installed on lampposts throughout the participating towns. Residents earn points by visiting these stations during the six-week game, allowing them to track their progress as they move through their neighbourhood.

Previous iterations of the challenge in Thurrock have demonstrated strong community engagement. In earlier programmes held in Chadwell St Mary and Tilbury, over 2,400 residents participated, collectively recording more than 9,000 miles of active travel. The initiative serves as a practical way for families, schools, and individuals to integrate more physical activity into their daily routines.
