Braintree residents have until 6 November to shape growth: what residents need to know

Residents, businesses and community groups in Braintree district have until 5pm on 6 November 2026 to comment on the Braintree District Submission Draft Local Plan. The consultation is the final opportunity to submit representations before the plan may go to independent examination.

How to comment before the deadline

Review the draft plan and its supporting evidence, then submit a representation through the Braintree District Council Local Plan 2043 consultation. The council says comments should address whether the plan has been prepared correctly, is supported by appropriate evidence and meets national planning requirements.

Paper copies of the documents and response forms are available at local libraries across the district and at Causeway House in Braintree. The council must receive comments by 5pm on 6 November. Anyone who wants to make points to the Planning Inspector during the examination must submit a representation to this consultation.

What the draft plan covers

The Local Plan sets out how Braintree district could grow and develop up to 2043. It identifies potential locations for homes, jobs and infrastructure, and includes policies intended to protect and enhance the environment, heritage and green spaces. Once adopted, it will help guide planning decisions across the district.

The council says the plan has been shaped by earlier public engagement, updated technical evidence, discussions with infrastructure providers and changes to national planning policy. Central government sets the housing requirement local authorities must plan for, according to Councillor Gabrielle Spray, the council’s Cabinet Member for Planning.

What happens after comments close

After 6 November, Full Council is due to decide in December whether to submit the plan to the Secretary of State for independent examination. If submitted, all consultation comments will be shared with the Planning Inspectorate.

A Planning Inspector would review the plan and representations, then determine whether changes are needed before the plan can be adopted. The council says an up-to-date plan helps it influence where development takes place and what infrastructure supports growth; without one, it warns, the government could intervene in local planning decisions.
