Bucknell road closure set for retaining wall repairs: what residents need to know

A weathered concrete retaining wall with ivy growing in Southern England.

A section of the C6208 near Bucknell will close for more than two weeks in July while crews repair a collapsed retaining wall.

The closure is scheduled to run from Monday 13 July to Friday 31 July 2026, affecting the route between the A488 New Invention and Lower Lye Junction. Shropshire Council says the road must be closed to vehicles around the clock so the work can be carried out safely.

Drivers using local routes around Bucknell should allow extra time during the works, particularly for journeys linking the C6208 with the A488 New Invention area.

Traffic will be sent along a signed diversion route for the duration of the closure. Shropshire Council has not published the full diversion wording in the notice, but advance warning signs are due to be installed on site before the works begin.

Residents and regular road users should check local signage before travelling, as the closure will apply continuously rather than only during working hours.

Access for residents, pedestrians and cyclists

Access to properties will be maintained up to the closure points. Through access will not be available where the repair site is closed.

Pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will also be unable to pass through the works area during the closure. That means the restriction is not limited to motor vehicles, and anyone planning local walking or cycling routes near Lower Lye Junction should avoid the closed stretch while the retaining wall works are under way.

Repair work planned on the retaining wall

The scheme will involve removing the collapsed retaining wall, building a new concrete footing, rebuilding the wall, installing parapet fencing, and reinstating the highway verge and carriageway.

The work will be carried out by Shropshire Council’s term maintenance contractor, Kier. WSP will supervise the scheme on behalf of Shropshire Council.

The council says information letters will be distributed to local residents before the closure begins, with advance warning signs installed at the site.
