Thousands of runners are expected in Cardiff city centre for the Kidney Wales Cardiff 10K on Sunday 6 September. The race starts at 10am, with the event scheduled to run until 1pm and a race village in the Civic Centre.

The event is aimed at runners, but the council notice does not state an entry price or confirm whether places remain available. Prospective participants should check the event organisers’ website for current entry information.

Civic Centre closures begin a day before the race

Preparing the race village will require six Civic Centre roads to close from 5am on Saturday 5 September until 6pm on Sunday 6 September. The affected roads are King Edward VII Avenue, Corbett Road, Museum Avenue, City Hall Road, College Road and Gorsedd Gardens Road.

That longer closure extends beyond the race itself, so anyone travelling through the Civic Centre on Saturday or Sunday will need to account for the restrictions.

Rolling closures cover major city-centre routes

Race-day rolling closures will operate between 9am and 1pm. The route includes North Road, the A1461, Kingsway, Duke Street, Castle Street, Boulevard de Nantes, Westgate Street, Wood Street, Quay Street, Central Square, Scott Road, Havelock Street and Park Street.

Restrictions will also affect parts of St Mary Street, High Street, Tudor Street and Cowbridge Road East. Cathedral Road will be closed from Cowbridge Road East to Penhill Road, together with all side roads that exit onto Cathedral Road.

The course reaches Fitzhamon Embankment and streets around Riverside, including Despenser Street, Despenser Lane, Despenser Place, Plantagenet Street, Beauchamp Street, Clare Street, Lower Cathedral Road, Brook Street, Mark Street, Green Street and Coldstream Terrace.

Other affected roads include Neville Street, Hamilton Street, Talbot Street, Sophia Close, Sophia Walk, the Spine Road in Sophia Gardens, Plasturton Place, Dyfrig Street, Kyveilog Street, Sneyd Street, Dogo Street, Berthwin Street, Teilo Street, Gileston Road, Meldwin Street, Fairleigh Road, Fields Park Road, Denbigh Street, Fairleigh Court and Heol Wilf Wooller.

Wellington Street will be restricted inbound towards the city centre from its junction with Leckwith Road. Penhill Road will also be affected in the inbound direction from the Llandaff Road and Cardiff Road junction. A lane closure is planned on Western Avenue between Excelsior Road and Mill Lane.

Managed access around North Road and Greyfairs Road

North Road will be affected between Colum Road and Boulevard de Nantes. Access to Blackweir will be managed through Park Place and Corbett Road, while Queen Anne Square can be reached through Colum Road and Corbett Road. Vehicles leaving Queen Anne Square will be directed from Corbett Road onto Colum Road.

Between 9am and 6pm, access to Greyfairs Road will be managed at the Boulevard de Nantes and Park Place junction. This arrangement is limited to bus movements and residents or businesses within the area.

The usual banned right turn from Colum Road into Corbett Road will be temporarily revoked solely for access to Queen Anne Square. Traffic-management stewards will control the movement, and residents, visitors and runners should use the organisers’ website for the latest event information before travelling.
