Cheshire West children get free Read to the Beat challenge

A summer of library books, eBooks, eAudiobooks, crafts and story sessions is about to begin across Cheshire West and Chester, with the Summer Reading Challenge 2026: Read to the Beat opening for sign-ups from Saturday 4 July.

The challenge is free. It is aimed mainly at children aged 4 to 12, with a Mini Challenge for under fours and a separate Teens Read Two challenge for 11 to 17-year-olds. It will run through local libraries across Cheshire West and Chester, with children able to sign up at a branch or online.

Sign-up starts at local libraries on 4 July

The first date for families to note is Sign-Up Saturday on 4 July. From then, children aged 4 to 12 can join at their local library or online and collect a starter pack to begin the challenge.

There is no charge to take part. The venue is not a single hall or theatre, but local libraries across Cheshire West and Chester, where library teams will also host activities during the summer holidays.

The core task is simple: read six books over the summer, or set a personal reading goal. Children who complete the challenge will receive a certificate and medal.

The reading can include library books, eBooks or eAudiobooks. The council says this year’s collection includes fiction, non-fiction, poetry and graphic novels, giving children room to choose by interest and reading level rather than by a single format.

Music and stories shape this year’s theme

The 2026 theme, Read to the Beat, links reading with music, rhythm and self-expression. The source material describes books and music as ways to spark creativity and imagination, with stories that include rhythm, rhyme and musical ideas.

That gives the programme a broader feel than a simple reading list. Families can expect library activities, crafts and story sessions alongside the reading challenge itself, although branch-by-branch schedules have not been detailed in the source information.

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Director of Environment and Communities, Maria Byrne, said children across the borough look forward to the Summer Reading Challenge each year, adding that reading and music can “inspire, build confidence and bring people together”.

The challenge has been running since 1999 and is designed to keep children reading while schools are closed for the summer. Last year, 4,699 children across Cheshire West and Chester took part and read 113,191 books over the holidays.

For families comparing local summer reading schemes, a similar free Read to the Beat challenge is also being offered for children in Derby, while wider library and literacy work remains active elsewhere in Cheshire, including expanded literacy support for Cheshire families.

Younger children and teens have separate routes

Under fours are not left out. The Mini Challenge is designed especially for younger children, giving families with preschool children a way to take part without following the main six-book format.

Teenagers also have a separate option this year. Following the format of Adults Read Two, the new Teens Read Two challenge is open to 11 to 17-year-olds.

To enter, teens need to read and review two books. Completing that process puts them into a prize draw for a £50 book voucher, with one winner set to receive the prize.

That separate route matters because the main Summer Reading Challenge is built around younger children aged 4 to 12. Teens Read Two gives older readers a shorter, review-based task rather than asking them to follow a challenge designed for primary-age children.

What families need before joining

Families can sign up in person at a local library, online or over the phone. The council has also said it is free to join the library.

Library membership gives access to books, eBooks, eAudiobooks, magazines, free Wi-Fi, computers and activities through the year. For this summer’s challenge, children can begin from Saturday 4 July and collect the starter pack once they sign up.
