Service at Holy Trinity Church before Broadgate parade

Coventry’s Armed Forces Day programme starts inside Holy Trinity Church, where the church service is scheduled to begin at 10.30am.

After the service, a short parade will move into Broadgate. The parade is due to run from 11.30am until 11.45am and will be led by the 13th Coventry Scout Band.

The march-past will feature past, present and future members of the Armed Forces community. Coventry City Council has said residents are being urged to gather in Broadgate to show support as the city joins the nationwide tribute.

What the city will mark on the day

Armed Forces Day is held annually on the last Saturday in June. It gives the public a shared moment to thank those connected to the Armed Forces community, including serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and families.

In Coventry, the Lord Mayor of the City of Coventry, Cllr Roger Bailey, will take the salute. He has named the Royal British Legion Coventry Branch as one of his chosen charities for his year in office.

Cllr Bailey said the day was a chance for Coventry to reflect on both civic and family links to military service. He referred to his own grandfather’s service in the 1920s, his father’s National Service, and family connections on the Lady Mayoress Pauline’s side to Navy service during times of conflict.

He said: “This day gives us all a chance to join together and show our pride – in our family members, and in all those who bravely serve, their families who support them, and the reservists, veterans and cadets.”

Cllr Linda Bigham, Armed Forces Champion for the Council, also encouraged people to attend, saying residents could come and cheer to show the Armed Forces community they are valued.

Public attendance and confirmed timings

No booking requirement has been announced in the council notice. The confirmed public information is that members of the public are welcome to attend both the church service and the parade.

The main public gathering point named by the council is Broadgate, where residents are being encouraged to support the march-past. The Armed Forces Day flag will also be raised on buildings and landmarks around the country, including Coventry’s Council House.

Armed Forces Day will close a wider week of national activity. That week also includes Reserves Day on 24 June.

Coventry is a member of the Armed Forces Covenant, a promise to look after current and former service personnel and their families.
