Croydon has appointed Councillor Mohammed Islam as its new Civic Mayor, following a special mayor-making ceremony at Annual Council on 27 May.
Councillor Islam, who represents Selhurst ward, will take on the borough’s ceremonial and public duties for the year ahead. He has lived in Croydon since 1980, after moving from Ipswich, and has lived in Selhurst for 22 years with his wife, Farhana, and their four children.
Selhurst councillor with long local ties
Outside the council chamber, Councillor Islam works as an approved driving instructor. He is also a founding member of the British Bangladeshi Society of Croydon, which provides educational, cultural and wellbeing support for the community.
He said he wants his term to focus on inclusion, mutual respect and bringing communities together across the borough.
“It is a privilege and a tremendous honour to serve as Civic Mayor and to represent our diverse borough in a role dedicated to public service,” Councillor Islam said. He added that he intends to champion charities during the year, with the chosen organisations expected to be formalised shortly.

Civic Mayor role differs from Executive Mayor
The Civic Mayor represents Croydon at ceremonial occasions and public engagements. The role is separate from the Executive Mayor, who is elected by residents every four years to lead Croydon Council.
That distinction matters locally because Croydon now has both a civic figurehead and an elected political leader. Jason Perry remains the Executive Mayor, a role covered in Beehive Web’s report on Croydon’s mayoral election result.
Councillor Scott Roche, who represents Shirley South ward, has been appointed Deputy Civic Mayor. He previously served as cabinet member for streets and environment, working across transport, sustainability and environmental services, and previously worked in Parliament as a senior caseworker for MPs.
Residents and community groups that want the Civic Mayor or Deputy Civic Mayor to attend an event are asked to apply through the council website at least two weeks in advance.
