Cumberland children get free bus travel—with one check

Children aged five to 15 can travel free on participating bus services across Cumberland from 1 to 31 August 2026. The month-long offer covers weekends as well as weekdays and could reduce the cost of journeys to holiday activities, town centres, the coast, countryside destinations and visits to friends or relatives.

The UK Government is funding the offer through its Great British Summer Savings campaign. Cumberland Council is promoting the scheme locally, but families should confirm that their intended service is participating and check any operator requirements before boarding.

The offer is for eligible bus journeys rather than entry to a particular attraction or organised activity. Families can therefore use participating services for different purposes during the school holidays, provided the child meets the age requirement and the planned bus is covered.

Families making a journey that uses more than one bus should check every part of the route. A participating first service does not confirm that another operator or connecting service is also covered.

Karl Melville, Cumberland Council’s Assistant Director for Highways and Transport, said the offer was intended to help families save money while making activities, attractions and services across Cumberland easier to reach during the summer holidays.

What families should check before boarding

The council announcement confirms the eligible ages, travel period and participating services, but it does not state whether children must travel with an adult, show proof of age or request a particular ticket. It also does not set out separate conditions for individual operators.

Families should contact or check information from the operator serving their route before setting out. This is especially important if a child is travelling independently, if their age may need to be verified or if the journey includes a service that is not explicitly listed in the council notice.

Using the offer for an August journey

Start by identifying the required bus and confirming that it is either a Stagecoach service or one of the six listed council routes operated by Reays Coaches. Then check the timetable and ask the operator whether any proof of eligibility or other action is required when boarding.

The arrangement applies only from 1 to 31 August 2026. Families travelling outside Cumberland should not assume that the same eligibility or conditions apply in another area. The Cumberland free-travel period ends after 31 August 2026, so journeys from September onwards are not covered by this offer.
