Councillor Faduma Mohamed has been inaugurated as the new Mayor of Ealing, taking on the borough’s civic role with a pledge to focus on unity, inclusion and local grassroots support.
Her appointment was confirmed at the annual meeting of the full council on Tuesday 26 May 2026. As mayor, she will represent Ealing at civic and community events, chair full council meetings and support charitable work during her year in office.
Faduma Mohamed takes on Ealing’s civic role
Councillor Mohamed, who represents Southall West, becomes Ealing’s first British Somali mayor wearing a hijab. She was deputy mayor last year and has served as a ward councillor since 2022.
The mayor will be supported during the year by her father, Ahmed Mohamed. Councillor Ghulam Murtaza has been appointed deputy mayor.
Council leader Peter Mason said Councillor Mohamed had been a dedicated representative for Southall and described her mayoralty as a visible sign of Ealing’s diversity. He said her appointment showed the borough values residents from all backgrounds.

The mayoral role in Ealing is civic and ceremonial rather than executive. It places the office holder at the centre of borough events, faith and community gatherings, charity activity and formal council occasions.
A Southall journey shaped by migration and education
Councillor Mohamed arrived in Southall at the age of 11 after fleeing the war in Somalia. She spoke no English at the time and has credited teachers and local support with helping her build a life in the borough.
She has spoken in particular about an English teacher at Dormers Wells High School who gave up lunch breaks to support her learning. That experience now forms part of the public story behind her mayoralty: a child arriving in west London after conflict, later becoming one of the borough’s civic representatives.
Councillor Mohamed said she felt “incredibly proud and honoured” to take on the role and wanted to be an example to girls and women who see themselves in her background and journey.

“Representation matters,” she said, adding that she wants to connect with communities across every corner of Ealing during her year as mayor.
Unity across churches, temples, mosques and streets
Councillor Mohamed has set out a mayoralty centred on community cohesion. She said she wants to bring people together and highlight what residents have in common, whether she is attending an event at a church, visiting a temple or mosque, or meeting someone experiencing homelessness.
That emphasis gives the appointment significance beyond the formal change of office. Ealing covers neighbourhoods with distinct histories, including Southall, Acton, Greenford, Hanwell, Northolt and Ealing town itself. The mayor’s diary often becomes a map of those connections, bringing civic attention to smaller organisations as well as major public events.
Her stated local priorities include inclusion, opportunities for young people and support for grassroots organisations. Readers following other borough leadership changes may also find useful context in Beehiveweb’s coverage of new council leadership priorities in Redbridge.

Charities chosen for the mayoral year
As part of the mayoral role, Councillor Mohamed will raise funds for two chosen charities: Hope for Southall Street Homeless and Stepping Stones Together UK.
Hope for Southall Street Homeless supports people experiencing homelessness through outreach services, emergency assistance and a day centre. Stepping Stones Together UK works with individuals and families through community support, advice and wellbeing-focused initiatives.
Councillor Mohamed said she hopes the fundraising will raise awareness, encourage residents to get involved and make a difference for vulnerable people in the borough.
She takes over the mayoralty from Councillor Anthony Kelly. Her year in office will now be shaped through civic visits, full council meetings, community events and the fundraising programme attached to the mayor’s charities.
