East Bridgford drivers face a year-long road closure

Drivers travelling through East Bridgford will face a major change from 24 August, when Kirk Hill and East Bridgford Road close for 12 months as main construction begins at the A614/A6097 Kirk Hill junction.

The closure follows archaeology work off East Bridgford Road, which Nottinghamshire County Council says has now been completed. A temporary speed restriction will also be introduced on the A6097 while the junction work is under way.

The closures are intended to allow the contractor, Danaher and Walsh, to work safely on the scheme for Nottinghamshire County Council and Via East Midlands. The council says it has planned the programme to reduce disruption where possible, but motorists should expect journeys to and from East Bridgford to take a different route for the duration of the works.

The signed diversion for East Bridgford traffic will run via Fosse Way, Butt Lane and Main Street.

Drivers have been specifically asked not to try to use Trent Lane or Brunt’s Lane to reach the village. Both roads will stay closed and will not reopen as part of the diversion arrangements.

That distinction matters for regular commuters and visitors: the diversion is the council-backed route during the closure, while the two closed lanes are not alternatives for accessing East Bridgford. People making regular journeys through the area will need to allow for the altered route from the first day of the closure, rather than relying on the closed lanes as a shortcut.

Kirk Hill junction work moves into its main phase

The A614/A6097 project began last month with archaeology work, and the next confirmed stage is the start of junction construction on 24 August. The completion of that preliminary work means the scheme is now moving into the phase requiring the year-long road closures.

When the Kirk Hill work is complete next autumn, the junction is expected to have an additional lane in each direction. New road markings are planned to make right turns easier, alongside a new traffic-signal system intended to manage vehicle flow.

The programme also includes upgraded street lighting, renewal of the footpath along Kirk Hill and improvements to the bridleway crossing for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. These works mean the project covers more than changes for motorists at the junction itself.

Councillor Bert Bingham, the county council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said the works would bring long-awaited improvements to a key route through Nottinghamshire.
