Electric buses bring quieter trips to Surrey passengers

Passengers travelling between Weybridge and Woking can now board the first vehicles from Falcon Buses’ new fleet of 13 electric buses. The zero-emission buses entered service on route 436 this week, beginning a phased introduction that will extend to another busy Surrey route later in the summer.

The 436 links Weybridge and Woking while serving Brooklands Museum and Mercedes-Benz World. For passengers, the immediate changes include quieter journeys, air-conditioned interiors and USB charging points throughout each vehicle.

Route 436 receives the first electric buses

Route 436 is the first Falcon Buses service to operate the new vehicles. The launch puts the British-built buses into regular passenger use rather than limiting them to trials or demonstrations.

Each bus can carry up to 37 seated passengers. Two dedicated wheelchair and buggy spaces are also provided, improving access for passengers with reduced mobility and people travelling with pushchairs.

The combination of air conditioning, charging points and accessible spaces means the fleet upgrade affects the experience inside the bus as well as the emissions produced on the road. The vehicles are described as zero-emission buses because they do not produce tailpipe emissions while operating.

Route 461 will follow later this summer

Falcon Buses plans to introduce the electric vehicles on route 461 later in summer 2026. No precise launch date has been confirmed in the source announcement.

The 461 serves Kingston, Walton-on-Thames, Weybridge, Addlestone and St Peter’s Hospital. Its wider sequence of town and service connections means the next phase will make the new passenger facilities available across another substantial part of Falcon’s North East Surrey network.

Until that second launch takes place, route 436 is the confirmed service where passengers can expect to encounter the new electric fleet. The operator has not provided a vehicle-by-vehicle timetable showing which individual journeys will use an electric bus.

Thirteen vehicles begin Falcon’s fleet transition

Falcon Buses is a family-owned operator based in West Byfleet. Managing director Richard Telling said the introduction represented the beginning of a new phase for the company and reflected its commitment to cleaner, quieter transport.

The project is supported by Surrey County Council and the Department for Transport’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas 2 programme, known as ZEBRA 2. Surrey County Council estimates that the 13 buses will save around 13,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over their operating lifetime; that figure is a projected lifetime saving rather than a measurement from their first journeys.

Steve Bax, Surrey County Council’s deputy cabinet member for highways, linked the investment to the county’s target of becoming net zero by 2050. Transport emissions are one of the areas the council says must be reduced to reach that goal.

West Byfleet depot prepares for more than 40 buses

The vehicles depend on new charging capacity at Falcon’s Wintersells Road depot. Commercial fleet electrification specialist VEV has worked with the operator to install infrastructure designed eventually to support more than 40 electric buses.

That planned capacity exceeds the initial 13-vehicle order and provides room for Falcon’s stated ambition to operate a fully electric bus fleet. The company currently runs a wider fleet of 75 vehicles across its scheduled bus and coach operations.

VEV senior account manager Barry Keane said the charging system had been designed for both current operations and the operator’s future plans. The next confirmed passenger-facing stage is the introduction of electric buses on route 461 later this summer.
