Finis Terrae tours Scotland with live score from 12 September: what residents need to know

FINIS TERRAE begins its five-stop Scottish tour at Montrose Playhouse on Saturday 12 September at 8.30pm. Screenings then visit Birnam Arts in Dunkeld, Eden Court Cinema in Inverness, DCA in Dundee and Filmhouse in Edinburgh, finishing on 16 September.

Tickets are being handled through the Cinetopia website, although prices have not been specified. The 80-minute film is rated U and presented for general audiences, pairing a 4K restoration of Jean Epstein’s 1929 silent drama with an original score performed live by Edinburgh-based composer and guitarist Dan Abrahams and French drummer Philippe Boudot.

Five Scottish screenings in five days

The tour follows consecutive dates from the east coast to the Highlands and Edinburgh. Four performances have confirmed evening start times; the Filmhouse time remains to be announced.

The opening performance forms part of LandxSea, Scotland’s Environmental Film Festival. The Montrose screening will also include a seaweed tasting prepared by local caterers, connecting directly with the film’s coastal setting and its story of kelp harvesters.

A remote island captured in a restored silent film

Finis Terrae follows four seaweed harvesters working on an isolated island off Brittany. After a quarrel between Ambroise and Jean-Marie, Ambroise is left with an unnoticed poisoned wound. His condition deteriorates until Jean-Marie must attempt to carry him across a turbulent, fog-covered sea to reach a doctor on nearby Ouessant.

Epstein filmed the drama in a documentary-like style using local non-actors. The harsh work, burning kelp and exposed coastline are treated as part of the story rather than a decorative setting, while experimental camerawork gives the sea and sky a shifting sense of beauty and danger.

The version touring Scotland uses Gaumont’s 4K restoration, allowing audiences to see a film made nearly a century ago in a contemporary cinema presentation.

Live musicians reshape the film’s sound world

The new score was created by Abrahams and Boudot and is performed alongside the screen at every tour stop. It received its world premiere at Scotland’s silent film festival Hippfest in March, followed by a preview during a Cinetopia Salon at Edinburgh’s French Institute.

Abrahams works across Edinburgh’s folk, jazz and contemporary classical scenes. His previous screen work includes music for Scottish archive films, while a 2024 Scottish Chamber Orchestra commission featured a percussion instrument made from bicycle wheels.

Normandy-born Boudot draws on jazz, rock, funk, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music as well as electroacoustic experimentation. His drumming incorporates acoustic performance and sampling, and his collaborations have taken him through French and UK music circles. For FINIS TERRAE, the pair perform the score live as the restored images unfold.

Tickets for the Montrose, Dunkeld, Inverness and Dundee dates are available through Cinetopia. The start time and ticket release for the Filmhouse screening in Edinburgh on 16 September are still to be confirmed.
