What to Expect at the Fairs
Beyond the Fairs: Year-Round Support

Residents seeking professional guidance to enter the workforce or transition into a new career can access free, expert support this June. Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Skills and Employment Service is hosting two dedicated Skills and Employability Fairs, designed to provide practical assistance with job hunting, interview preparation, and networking strategies.

These sessions are open to anyone aged 16 and over, and there is no requirement to pre-register. Attendees are encouraged to simply drop in during the event hours to speak directly with advisors who specialize in helping local residents overcome barriers to employment.

The fairs are scheduled to take place across two consecutive days in Ellesmere Port and Northwich. Both events are free to attend.

These events are held in conjunction with National Employability Day, a nationwide initiative that highlights the vital role of local employment support. Whether you are a young person searching for your first role, or an individual managing a long-term health condition, the advisors on-site can provide tailored guidance. Key highlights of the sessions include:

CV Development: Professional tips on how to structure your CV to stand out to local recruiters.
Interview Practice: One-to-one support to help build confidence and refine your responses to common interview questions.
Job Search Strategies: Guidance on navigating current local vacancies and effective networking techniques.
Confidence Building: Support for those who may have been out of the workforce for an extended period.

Beyond the Fairs: Year-Round Support

The council’s Skills and Employment Service provides ongoing assistance throughout the year, managing over 1,000 active cases at any given time. Their support extends far beyond these two-hour sessions, offering adult skills training ranging from basic IT literacy to specialized construction certifications.

Recent successes include the ‘Connect To Work’ project, which has already assisted over 400 residents with disabilities or complex health conditions in moving toward stable employment. Additionally, the service frequently partners with local businesses to host ‘Skills Bootcamps.’ Following a successful recent program in Fork-Lift Truck Operations, the council has announced a new hospitality-focused Skills Bootcamp scheduled for late summer. This upcoming program will offer participants food hygiene certification and customer-facing training, followed by dedicated support for CV and interview preparation.
