Free Moray Inclusion Games come to Elgin on 22 August
Moray Sports Centre will open its doors to disabled people, local sports clubs, community organisations and the wider public for the free Moray Inclusion Games on Saturday 22 August. The event runs from 10am to 1.30pm at the centre on Linkwood Road, Elgin, with opening speeches scheduled for 11am.
The games will also mark the launch of the Moray Disability Sports Hub, a partnership developed to widen access to sport and physical activity across the area. Everyone is welcome, whether they want to try an activity, meet participating organisations or learn about inclusive sporting opportunities in Moray.
Five inclusive sports available to try
Visitors can take part in free “come and try” sessions covering boccia, indoor curling, table cricket, taekwondo and swordseat fencing. Activity leaders will introduce each sport, guide participants through the sessions and explain how people can become involved locally after the event.
The programme is intended to put the available activities at the centre of the day. It gives people who may not have encountered these sports before a direct way to explore them while also bringing existing clubs and prospective participants into the same venue.
Information stalls will be hosted by organisations including Moray Active Schools and Community Sport, Moray Reach Out, Moray UHI, North East Sensory Services, Elgin Sports Community Trust, Active Recovery Moray and Police Scotland. Visitors will be able to speak with clubs and organisations about inclusive sport elsewhere in the region.
The partnership behind Moray Disability Sports Hub
The Hub has been taking shape since its first meeting almost two years ago. Its partners include local sports clubs, voluntary and third-sector organisations, Moray Council, Moray Health and Social Care Partnership, sportscotland, Scottish Disability Sport and Grampian Disability Sport.
Their work is focused on increasing opportunities for disabled people to participate in sport and physical activity. The Hub also aims to recognise participants through their skills, abilities and potential while identifying and removing barriers that can restrict involvement.
Moray Council Equalities Champion Bridget Mustard said the Hub would bring organisations, clubs and communities together to create more opportunities for disabled people to participate, develop skills and build connections. She encouraged anyone interested in inclusive sport to attend and contribute to the future of disability sport in Moray.
Hub spokesperson Martin Mansell described the launch as a milestone following almost two years of partnership work. He said the games would allow people to try activities, meet local groups and help inform the Hub’s future priorities.
