Scarborough will host a free Armed Forces Day celebration on Saturday, 27 June, with RAF air displays, a veterans’ parade, marching bands and family activities across the resort.

The public event is scheduled to run from 11am to 5pm. It is being hosted by North Yorkshire Council and is aimed at residents, visitors, veterans, service families, cadets and anyone who wants to support the Armed Forces community.

The day brings one of the region’s major Armed Forces celebrations back to the Yorkshire coast, with thousands of people expected in Scarborough for the programme of ceremonial moments, live music and displays.

The celebration is part of the council’s work around the Armed Forces Covenant, which supports serving personnel, veterans and their families in accessing public and private sector services.

Council leader Cllr Carl Les said the day was about unity, pride and community spirit, adding that events across the country would show support for serving troops, service families, veterans and cadets.

Six aircraft displays over the Yorkshire coast

Air displays form a central part of this year’s programme, with six scheduled appearances through the day. The opening flypast is due shortly after the event begins, and the final headline display is set for late afternoon.

The confirmed air display schedule is:

Time Display
11.30am RAF Chinook flypast
11.40am RAF Tutor T Mark 1 precision display
1.30pm Hawker Fury display
2.30pm Calidus AutoGyro display
3.30pm RAF Supermarine Spitfire display
4.05pm RAF Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 display

The RAF Chinook will open the day in the air. The aircraft is one of the RAF’s most recognisable, with the source noting it can carry up to 55 troops or heavy cargo loads.

Later in the afternoon, the RAF Supermarine Spitfire is due to return to Scarborough’s skies, followed by the RAF Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4. The Typhoon is listed as the day’s headline display, with the council highlighting its speed, power and agility as a frontline fighter.

Parade, bands and Chelsea Pensioners display

On the ground, the day will include traditional military marches, band displays, presentations and live music through the afternoon.

Among those taking part are Scarborough Sea Cadets, veterans, standards and cadets’ parades. The parades will be led by the Queen’s Own Yeomanry and the Yorkshire Volunteers Band.

This year’s attractions also include a Chelsea Pensioners display. North Yorkshire Council said it will be their first appearance at Scarborough Armed Forces Day.

The veterans’ parade is expected to be one of the central ceremonial moments of the day, bringing together serving personnel, veterans, cadets and families in front of the crowds gathered in the resort.

Why the day has strong North Yorkshire ties

North Yorkshire has a large Armed Forces presence. The county has more than 12,000 people working for the Ministry of Defence and 3,000 children from service families in schools.

Catterick Garrison is one of the country’s largest military bases, and the county also has barracks at Dishforth, Ripon and Topcliffe. RAF stations at Leeming, Fylingdales and Menwith Hill are also based in North Yorkshire, along with the Harrogate-based Army Foundation College.

Cllr Kevin Foster, the council’s Armed Forces champion, said the event was a chance for residents and visitors to show appreciation for currently serving personnel, veterans, cadets and their families.

Before the main Saturday event, Army Cadets will lead a flag-raising at Scarborough Town Hall on Monday, 22 June, marking the official opening of the event. Scarborough Armed Forces Day is sponsored by Skipton Building Society for the second year running.
