Hackney appeal seeks school supplies for pupils

Hackney residents are being asked to donate secondary school supplies for children moving from Year 6 into Year 7 this September, with donations requested before 31 July.

The Pack To School Appeal is collecting items for starter packs that will help pupils begin secondary school with basic classroom equipment. Supporters can buy from the appeal list or shop locally and drop donations at Forest Road Youth Hub.

Donations are needed by 31 July

The appeal is open to residents who want to provide practical supplies for local children before the new school year begins.

People who prefer not to use the appeal list can buy suitable items locally and take them directly to the youth hub.

Items requested for Year 7 starter packs

Each school pack is expected to include everyday essentials used by pupils starting secondary school. The core items include:

  • A new rucksack
  • A geometry set
  • Pens
  • A scientific calculator

Hackney Youth Parliament has also highlighted extra items that can help students feel more confident and prepared for the start of term. Residents are being directed to the Young Hackney page for the full list of requested items and suggestions on where to buy them.

Where to take locally bought supplies

Locally purchased donations can be dropped off at Forest Road Youth Hub, 29 Forest Rd, London E8 3BY.

The address is the named collection point for residents who want to support the appeal without ordering through the campaign list. Donors should check the Young Hackney information before buying if they want to make sure their items match the current request.

Why the appeal matters in Hackney

Hackney Youth Parliament said around 64% of children in Hackney live in low-income households, meaning the cost of preparing for a new school year can place pressure on families.

The organisation said this is the fourth year of the Pack To School Appeal. Previous rounds have helped hundreds of young people start secondary school with the equipment they need in their bags.

“It is our mission to make starting secondary school as easy as possible for students moving from Year 6 into Year 7,” Hackney Youth Parliament said.

People who want to donate should review the Young Hackney campaign information for the current item list, buying suggestions and any further instructions before the 31 July deadline.

Hackney Youth Parliament said it is asking the community to help reach more young people across the borough and give them “a positive start to secondary school.”
