Inside Huddersfield’s free Library Hub opening week
Lego Club, chess, knitting and makerspace demonstrations will be among the first activities inside Huddersfield’s new Library Hub when it opens in September. The programme then expands into Queensgate Square for a weekend of live music, workshops, games and family activities.
The opening week runs from Monday 21 September to Sunday 27 September 2026 at Huddersfield Library Hub and Queensgate Square in Huddersfield town centre. Activities are free, aimed at all ages and available without booking unless a programme listing states otherwise. On Saturday 26 September, the Library Hub opens at 9.30am, while events in Queensgate Square run from noon to 5pm.
Kirklees Council is organising the celebration around two of the first completed public spaces in the Our Cultural Heart project. Regular library users, families seeking a day out and people who simply want to see the new buildings are all invited.
Inside the Library Hub from opening day
The Library Hub opens on Monday 21 September as a place for reading, learning, studying, creative work and community activities. During its first week, visitors will be able to explore the building, meet the library team and learn about the services and facilities available there.
Saturday brings the most detailed programme announced so far. From 9.30am, visitors can join Lego Club, Chess Club and Knit and Natter, follow a family Library Adventures Trail or watch demonstrations in the makerspace.
These sessions give visitors several ways to test how the new building will work in everyday use. Children can take part in structured activities, while adults can explore spaces intended for study, making and meeting other people.
Queensgate Square fills with music and workshops
The focus spreads outdoors over the weekend of Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September. Queensgate Square will host live music, arts and crafts, interactive workshops, community art, traditional games and food and drink vendors.
Saturday’s square programme is scheduled from noon until 5pm. Activities continue through Sunday, with the overall opening celebration ending at 5pm. The weekend programme also includes skateboarding sessions and other activities designed for different age groups.
The square and Library Hub form part of the wider redevelopment of Huddersfield town centre through Our Cultural Heart. Kirklees Council says a Food Hall is due to open next year, while work is already under way on a Museum and Art Gallery.
Councillor Pip Harvey, Kirklees Council’s Cabinet Member for Place, Volunteering and Culture, described the opening as a milestone for the town and invited residents to explore the Hub during the week before joining the weekend programme in the square.
Booking details and the next programme update
All announced opening-week activities are free. Visitors can drop in during the week or attend the opening weekend, although individual sessions may carry separate booking instructions when the complete programme is released.
The published notice does not include transport or accessibility guidance, and some Sunday session times have yet to be listed individually. Kirklees Council plans to publish the full schedule, including detailed timings and any booking requirements, through its social media channels nearer the opening date.
