Huddersfield library users face a temporary service switch
Huddersfield Library’s current hub will temporarily close while the service moves into its new home at Our Cultural Heart. Interim arrangements begin on Sunday 30 August, with the new library due to open on Monday 21 September.
The dates and replacement services were set out in a Kirklees Council notice published on 28 August 2026.
Key dates for the Huddersfield Library move

Five nearby libraries available during the closure
Kirklees Council identifies these as the nearest alternatives for Huddersfield Library users:
- Almondbury Library Hub
- Birkby and Fartown Library
- Chestnut Centre in Deighton
- Lindley Library
- Rawthorpe and Dalton Library
Residents can also use Library Hubs in Batley, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Dewsbury, Heckmondwike, Holmfirth, Kirkburton and Ravensthorpe’s Greenwood Centre. Opening hours vary, so customers should check with Kirklees Libraries before travelling.
Services continuing at Civic Centre 3
A limited range of facilities will remain available at Civic Centre 3. Customers can:
- Return library books through the dedicated return box
- Deposit Carephones equipment in the designated box
- Use public computers and telephones to access council services
- Access planning and personal-search software on designated computers
- Use the self-scan station
Emergency support from Client Financial Affairs will also remain available there. Customers whose finances are managed by Kirklees Council can request help if a lost pre-payment card leaves them needing an Emergency Top-Up Payment Card.
Eligible residents without email access can have Local Welfare Provision energy vouchers printed at any Kirklees Library Hub. Those unable to travel to another hub can arrange collection from Civic Centre 3 through the Local Welfare Provision team.
Library services available at other branches
Other Kirklees libraries will continue lending and accepting books, issuing memberships, handling reservations and helping customers use online resources. Printing, photocopying, study areas, newspapers, magazines, local-studies support and community activities will also remain available.
The council says some Huddersfield Library Hub services will be unavailable during the move but has not listed each paused service separately. Support for Blue Badge applications, disabled and senior bus passes, and Town Hall ticket purchases will continue through alternative locations or contact channels.
