Ipswich families set to gain a new children’s library

Ipswich County Library is set for its first major refurbishment in 40 years, with almost £900,000 being invested to modernise one of the town’s most-used community spaces.

The project will include a completely refurbished children’s library, alongside changes designed to make the landmark building more welcoming, modern and accessible for people of all ages. The announcement was published by Suffolk County Council on 29 July 2026.

What the refurbishment means for families and visitors

Plans have been shaped by feedback from library users, with the new children’s area expected to be a central part of the work. Suffolk Community Libraries said the improvement could make a significant difference for local families, while also helping attract people who do not currently use the library.

The wider refurbishment is intended to improve the experience for existing visitors and support the building’s continuing role as a place to read, learn, meet and take part in community activities. Ipswich County Library is already one of Suffolk Community Libraries’ most popular sites, and the project is described as the biggest investment in the building for more than four decades.

Krystal Vittles, Head of Library Service at Suffolk Community Libraries, said the funding would make the building more accessible to current users and more appealing to those who have not yet discovered it. She also highlighted the potential impact of the new children’s library for local families.

How the almost £900,000 project is funded

The investment combines several funding sources, including a £500,000 grant from the Government’s Libraries Improvement Fund.

Additional support is coming from The Clore Duffield Foundation, The Wolfson Foundation and local developer contributions. Suffolk Community Libraries is one of 28 library services across England to receive funding through the programme, which forms part of the Government’s Arts Everywhere Fund and is managed by Arts Council England on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

That mix of funding will support changes to a well-used community and cultural space, rather than a standalone upgrade to one part of the building. A similar library upgrade in Harrow’s Roxeth Library has also focused on creating more flexible and useful space for local communities.

When Ipswich library users can expect more detail

Construction is expected to begin towards the end of 2026. Some disruption to library services is likely while the refurbishment takes place, but the council has not yet provided details of how access, facilities or opening arrangements may be affected.

Further information about the plans will be released in the coming months, with more detail expected closer to the start of the project. That later update should clarify how services will operate during the work and what visitors need to know before construction begins.

Suffolk County Council cabinet member June Mummery said the refurbishment would help ensure the library continues serving people in Ipswich for many years. The confirmed next milestone for users is therefore the release of more detailed plans ahead of the expected late-2026 start.
