For parents in Lithuania’s second-largest city, the countdown to summer childcare has officially begun. Kaunas City Municipality has announced that registration for its extensive summer camp program will open on May 20th at 9:00 AM. With over 4,700 spots available across a diverse range of activities, the city is investing more than €700,000 to ensure that the summer break is both productive and accessible for local families.
This year’s initiative is particularly robust, involving 36 different educational, cultural, and sports institutions. Beyond the standard camp spots, an additional 2,000 children will be eligible for free educational sessions, reflecting a significant push by the municipality to provide high-quality leisure options for the youth of Kaunas.
Key Registration Details and Eligibility
To ensure a fair distribution of spots, the municipality has implemented a strict “one child, one camp” policy. Parents and guardians must be prepared to act quickly, as these spots are traditionally high in demand and often fill within the first few hours of the portal opening.

- Registration Start: May 20, 2024, at 9:00 AM.
- Official Portal: vaikai.kaunas.lt
- Requirements: Parents must provide the child’s personal identification code (asmens kodas) to complete the registration.
- Secondary Window: For those who miss out on the initial round, a second registration phase is planned for June, offering approximately 400 additional spots.
For families belonging to socially vulnerable groups, the program offers a vital safety net. More than 1,400 children from these backgrounds will receive fully funded participation, including all meals and activities, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent children from enjoying a structured summer experience.
Diverse Programs: From Motorboats to Robotics
The 2024 program is notable for its variety, moving beyond traditional day-care models to offer specialized skill-building. This year, 11 new organizations have joined the initiative, bringing fresh ideas to the 193 planned camp shifts (181 day camps and 12 overnight stays).

Among the standout offerings this year are motorboat sports camps, where children can learn navigation basics and water safety. For those who prefer the indoors, there are intensive ice-skating camps and LEGO robotics sessions focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) principles. Language learning is also a priority, with English-language camps designed to introduce various professions—from aviation to medicine—through immersive play and projects.
Many of these camps are also specifically adapted for children with special educational needs, ensuring inclusivity across the board. The activities are not confined to the city limits; many programs include excursions to surrounding districts such as Jonava, Zapyškis, and Birštonas, aiming to strengthen children’s connection with nature and their local heritage.

Timing and Practical Considerations
The camps are scheduled to begin immediately following the conclusion of the academic year. For primary school students, activities are slated to start as early as June 8th. Older students will see their programs begin on June 15th.
While the registration portal is the primary tool for parents, the municipality emphasizes that the goal is more than just supervised play. The curriculum for these camps is designed to foster independence, teamwork, and practical skills that will benefit students when they return to the classroom in September. Parents are encouraged to browse the available programs on the official website ahead of the May 20th deadline to identify the best fit for their child’s interests and developmental needs.
