Liverpool free liver checks: June event dates

Liverpool residents will be offered free liver health checks this June as the BSG LIVE 2026 Public Health Engagement Programme comes to the city alongside the annual conference of The British Society of Gastroenterology.

The checks will be available while BSG LIVE 2026 is in Liverpool from 22 to 25 June. Booking details have not yet been released, but organisers say information on how the public can book a free scan will be shared closer to the event.

A wider public engagement programme will also bring Colin the Colon, the inflatable digestive health exhibit from Guts UK, to Metquarter Liverpool on Sunday 21 June. The initiative is aimed at the general public and is free to access, with the liver scans intended for people living in Liverpool.

Free FibroScan checks during BSG LIVE

The public health initiative is being delivered by Liverpool Experience Campus (LEX) with The British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), the British Liver Trust, Liverpool Convention Bureau and Liverpool City Council’s Public Health team.

The free checks will use FibroScan technology, described by organisers as quick, non-invasive and painless. The scans can detect early signs of liver disease before symptoms appear, giving people a chance to seek treatment, advice or lifestyle support earlier.

Liverpool Experience Campus said the programme is part of its Legacy Strategy, designed to ensure major conferences leave benefits for the Liverpool City Region beyond delegate spending and event activity.

The source material says liver disease is now the third leading cause of premature death in the UK, while around 90% of cases are preventable. Alcohol-related liver disease is highlighted as one of the few major causes of death still rising among people under 75, often developing without symptoms until a late stage.

Colin the Colon at Metquarter Liverpool

The public programme begins before the main conference dates, with Colin the Colon due at Metquarter Liverpool on Sunday 21 June.

The inflatable exhibit is designed to help people of all ages understand digestive health in a more accessible and memorable way. Organisers say it is part of the effort to move the conference’s health message out into the city, rather than keeping it only inside professional sessions.

BSG LIVE 2026 itself takes place from 22 to 25 June. The source does not give public opening times for the Metquarter exhibit or scan sessions, and no booking link has yet been published.

What residents can do before booking opens

People interested in a free scan should watch for booking details closer to the event. The announcement confirms that details will be released, but does not yet say whether booking will be online, by phone or through a partner service.

A spokesperson for The British Society of Gastroenterology said the organisation was pleased to help create a legacy beyond the conference, adding that the initiative reflected its commitment to prevention, early diagnosis and public engagement.

Cllr Harry Doyle, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, said liver disease is one of the most significant and preventable health challenges facing the city, and said bringing free liver health checks into the community could help people understand risk and act earlier.

Professor Matt Ashton, Director of Public Health for Liverpool, said early detection is critical because liver disease often develops silently. He said FibroScan testing in community settings gives people the opportunity to identify issues before they become serious and to access advice and support.

Help remains available outside the event

The source advises anyone unable to access a scan during the event, or anyone already concerned about their liver health, to speak to their GP or local pharmacy. Liver health can be assessed through routine tests and, where appropriate, referral for further investigation.

Support is also available year-round in Liverpool for people worried about alcohol use. River, Liverpool’s commissioned drug and alcohol treatment service, offers free, confidential support and can be contacted on 0151 706 7888.
