Manchester scheme targets barriers to digital mental healthcare
By the Beehive Web editorial team | 11 August 2026
A Manchester-led government initiative has launched to help digital mental health technologies move beyond pilot projects and into routine care across the UK.
The Mental Health Digital Innovation workstream is part of the UK Government’s Mental Health Goals Programme. Led by the University of Manchester, it will connect people with lived experience, NHS organisations, clinicians, researchers, technology companies, investors and academic institutions.

Clearer routes from testing to NHS care
The scheme is intended to address obstacles that can prevent promising tools from being adopted widely. The University of Manchester identified fragmented infrastructure, complicated procurement, unclear reimbursement routes, limited coordination and weak signals about what health services need.
Its scope includes digital mental health interventions, digital therapeutics, remote monitoring, wearable technology and data-driven decision-support systems. The programme will develop implementation guidance, digital navigation support and clearer routes for procurement and reimbursement.

It will also seek sustainable public and private investment models while reducing duplicated work between NHS organisations.
Lived experience built into development
People who have experienced mental health conditions are expected to participate throughout the innovation process, rather than only being consulted after products have been designed.

The stated aim is to ensure new services are clinically effective and meaningful to those using them. For technology developers, the scheme is intended to simplify access to NHS guidance, partnerships, investment opportunities and routes to wider adoption.
Manchester provides national leadership
Professor Pauline Whelan of the University of Manchester and CareLoop Health Ltd is leading the workstream with Dr Trina Histon, director of Percolating Health. Partners include NHS organisations, Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex, MindTech Bridge, the Mental Health Translational Research Collaboration and DATAMIND.
The announcement does not specify funding, delivery deadlines or named Manchester patients and health services that will benefit first. Its confirmed local relevance is Manchester’s leadership of a national programme, with future work focused on building practical adoption pathways and coordinating support across the UK.
