Redbridge plans homes, parks and SEND support

Redbridge residents have been given an update on council plans that could affect housing, local green space, SEND education and children’s holiday activities.

In a leader’s update published on Friday 5 June 2026, Redbridge Council said it is turning manifesto commitments into council plans, including proposals for 1,000 new affordable homes, four new pocket parks and further investment in services for children and families.

Families in Ilford are also being told to watch for the opening of a new school for children with special educational needs and disabilities. The council says the SEND school is intended to help more children access education and support closer to home.

Affordable homes and pocket parks in the pipeline

The council says its housing pledge is to bring 1,000 new affordable homes to Redbridge. The update does not set out sites, delivery dates or eligibility details, so residents on housing registers and families looking for affordable options should treat this as a policy direction rather than a booking or application window.

Four new pocket parks are also planned as part of a wider push to expand green spaces. Pocket parks are typically small local spaces, often placed within residential neighbourhoods or near busy streets, so the practical impact will depend on where the council confirms locations.

For residents, the next useful detail will be whether the parks are tied to existing public land, new developments or changes to local streets and estates.

Ilford SEND school due to open soon

A new SEND school in Ilford is described by the council as a state-of-the-art facility. The stated aim is to allow more local children with additional needs to receive education and support within the borough instead of travelling further away.

The update does not include admissions criteria, opening date, age range or referral arrangements. Parents and carers should wait for formal school and council admissions information before making decisions about placements.

Families following the borough’s wider SEND plans may also want context from local coverage of the Redbridge SEND board.

The project sits within a wider council priority to make Redbridge a better place for children, including its existing UNICEF child-friendly recognition work.

Play events and Megamix bookings for children

Redbridge Council and local partners have arranged more than 50 events during the week after the update to mark UNICEF International Day of Play.

Megamix, the borough’s summer and Easter holiday activity programme, is also due to open for bookings soon. It is open to Redbridge children aged five and over, with activities including sport, dance, drama, music skills and digital workshops.

Some activities will need advance booking. The council says sessions will be held at local facilities and venues in and around Redbridge.

Adapted sessions for children needing extra support

The Megamix programme is expected to include adapted sessions for children who would benefit from additional support. Activities mentioned by the council include cycling, water sports and arts and crafts.

Parents and carers should check session details before booking, especially where a child needs accessibility support, adapted activities, transport planning or one-to-one help. Bookings are expected to open soon, with some sessions requiring advance registration.
