Sevenoaks District Council is hosting a series of free, drop-in information roadshows this September to help residents prepare for the transition to a new wheelie bin collection service. With the new system launching on 12 October 2026, these events provide a direct opportunity for households to view the new bins, ask questions about the upcoming alternate-weekly schedule, and receive guidance on the new recycling procedures.

No booking is required to attend these sessions. Council staff will be present at each location to provide demonstrations and offer advice on waste reduction. Additionally, attendees can collect a free roll of food waste caddy liners, subject to availability.

Understanding the New Collection System

Starting 12 October 2026, the district will move to an alternate-weekly collection rhythm. Under this new model, households will use a 240-litre bin with a green lid for recycling and a 180-litre black bin for general waste. The collections will alternate, with general waste picked up one week and recycling the next.

A significant change for many residents is the introduction of home glass collection, which will now be processed through the new recycling bin. Food waste collection services will remain unchanged, continuing as a weekly service in the existing small orange and black caddies.

Preparing for the October Rollout

The Council is currently in the process of delivering the new wheelie bins to properties across the district. Distribution is expected to be completed by early October, ahead of the service start date.

Cllr Irene Roy, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner and Greener, noted that similar engagement events held earlier this year regarding food waste were well-received by the public. These roadshows are intended to help residents navigate the new collection rhythm and understand the sorting requirements before the system goes live.
