Blackmill drivers face months of disruption as bridge closes

A concrete bridge crosses a flowing river with houses and trees in the background.

Drivers using the A4061 at Blackmill should plan for several periods of road closure from January 2027, followed by an extended closure from April while the river bridge deck is replaced. The closure duration has not been set, and the diversion will run via the A4093 at Llangeinor.

Bridgend County Borough Council says routine inspections identified structural issues with the bridge. Utility and preparatory work is due to begin in January; utilities will also need to be reinstalled after the new deck is in place.

Closures will come in stages from January

The first closures are expected from January 2027 for utility and preparatory work. The longer closure is expected from April, when the existing deck is removed and replaced. No durations have been confirmed for any of the closures.

Stage Expected timing What road users should expect
Utility and preparatory work From January 2027 Other closure periods as the work is completed
Bridge deck replacement From April 2027 An extended road closure; duration not yet confirmed
Utility reinstatement After deck replacement Further work to restore utility infrastructure

The project is supported by £3.5 million in Welsh Government regional transport funding. The council describes the work as essential maintenance to address safety concerns and safeguard the route.

Diversion uses the A4093 at Llangeinor

Motorists will be diverted via the A4093 at Llangeinor. Signs are due to be installed at least four weeks before work begins, with additional signage in wider areas to help drivers plan their journeys.

The council and its contractor, Centregreat Limited, say they will provide updates before and during the project. The council also held a public meeting ahead of the work and says further meetings will be arranged with specific community groups and the wider public.

School transport changes will go directly to parents

Arrangements are being confirmed with school transport providers. Parents will be contacted directly if services change. The council says it will also plan for any other council services directly affected by the closure.
