Derby residents can shape crematorium plans on 3 October: what residents need to know
Derby residents, visitors and businesses can examine plans for a new Markeaton Crematorium at Derby City Lab on Saturday 3 October 2026. The free public consultation runs from 10am to 1pm and is open to all three groups.

Memorial gardens would remain in use
Markeaton Crematorium opened in 1956 and has supported Derby families for nearly 70 years. The council says its layout and facilities have become dated after decades of use, leading to the proposal for a replacement rather than another alteration to the current building.
Under the plans, the existing crematorium would be demolished once the new development proceeds. Its memorials, gardens and ash-scattering areas would be protected and maintained, with a connection created between the existing grounds and the new site.
Memorial stained-glass windows funded through public donations would also be carefully removed from the current building and incorporated into the proposed development. This would retain a visible part of the original crematorium within the replacement facility.
Sustainability forms part of the design discussion
The proposal includes modern energy-efficient cremators and air-filtration systems. Measures supporting biodiversity and water sustainability are also included in the plans presented by Derby City Council.
These elements sit alongside accessible facilities and the proposed spaces for quiet reflection. Attendees can therefore respond to both the practical operation of the crematorium and the experience intended for families, staff and the wider community.
