Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has called for the European Union to accelerate the accession process for Moldova and Ukraine, urging the opening of formal negotiations before the summer break. During a telephone conversation with Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Monday, Nausėda emphasized that both nations should advance through the integration process simultaneously to maintain regional stability and political momentum.

Accelerating the Accession Timeline

The Lithuanian leader stated that it is essential for the EU to open all six groups of negotiating chapters for both Moldova and Ukraine during the month of June. He warned that progress in the enlargement process should not be taken for granted, stressing the need for continued political unity among EU member states.

“At the next General Affairs Council meeting, it is necessary to take the required decisions and hold intergovernmental conferences with Moldova and Ukraine before the summer break,” Nausėda said. This diplomatic push aligns with the upcoming EU-Moldova summit on June 22, which the President identified as a critical opportunity to mobilize further support for Moldova’s European trajectory.

Strategic Goals and Reform Requirements

While offering strong diplomatic backing, the Lithuanian President reiterated the necessity for Moldova to implement consistent reforms despite challenging circumstances. He specifically highlighted the need for irreversible progress in the rule of law, the strengthening of the judicial system, and the fight against corruption and organized crime.

Lithuania has set a target for both Moldova and Ukraine to achieve full EU membership no later than 2030. This objective is expected to remain a cornerstone of Lithuanian foreign policy for the foreseeable future. President Nausėda noted that EU enlargement will be a primary priority when Lithuania assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2027, signaling a long-term commitment to integrating the Eastern Partnership countries into the European fold.
